Real Sociedad’s home ground has been the scene of many a bad memories for Cules over the last ten years with Barca winning just a single game there since 2010. The “curse of the Anoeta” has yielded three wins for the home side and a comeback draw during the 2011-12 season, meaning two treble winning coaches – Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique – departed the Barca job having never won a game in the Basque costal city.
However, many Barca fans enter this particular tie wondering if the curse has finally ended. Under Ernesto Valverde, the Blaugrana fought back from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 away to Real Sociedad last season. More importantly, the Anoeta Stadium has undergone extensive renovations over the summer, with the running track now removed and replaced by more seats. Saturday’s match up will be La Real’s first in the new stadium and it will be interesting to see what effect the refreshed surroundings will have on the players.
