Heisman rankings – Week 3: Dwayne Haskins cements himself near top
6. Cole McDonald, QB, Hawaii
There are times where you might look at the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and think that they don’t play anyone. However, though they haven’t been going up against a gauntlet of Power 5 teams, they’ve been seeing quality competition in Colorado State, Navy, Rice and Army this past week. And, helping them to a 3-1 record in those games, quarterback Cole McDonald has been putting up absolutely ridiculous numbers.
Through four games now, McDonald has thrown for at least 300 yards in each for a total of 1,486 yards while completing 68.5 percent of his throws. Most impressively, McDonald has thrown 15 touchdowns and still has yet to throw an interception on the year. When you then factor in the two rushing touchdowns and 144 yards on the ground too, his numbers are too impressive to overlook.
5. Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin
Considering that the Heisman Trophy is an individual award, it’s sometimes frustrating how much team success can factor into how the honor is ultimately doled out. Having said that, this early in the season, it’s a good argument to separate candidates from one another, which is why Jonathan Taylor and the Wisconsin Badgers losing to BYU is a bad look for the star running back.
Taylor acquitted himself solidly in the loss, rushing 26 times for 117 yards and adding three receptions for 14 yards. However, the Badgers star simply wasn’t on the level that he had been in the previous two games and, more importantly, didn’t score in a game where his team lost by only a field goal. In the end, that brings him down a notch in these rankings — for now, at least.
