2. New England Patriots

As they await Julian Edelman’s return from a four-game suspension, the Patriots have played some musical chairs with the wide receiver depth chart since the preseason. Malcolm Mitchell, Jordan Matthews and Kenny Britt were shuffled out, replaced most recently by Corey Coleman and Benny Fowler.

On the heels of the Gordon news Saturday, in what appears to be a coincidence with a need for extra offensive line depth, they released Fowler.

A move to add a wide receiver seems to be coming in New England looking toward Week 3, but Ian Rapoport reported Gordon is not necessarily first in line.

It’s worth wondering if Gordon carries too much risk (implied or otherwise) for Bill Belichick, and other wide receivers (Chad Johnson) have struggled to pick up the playbook quickly. But if it’s purely a question of taking a chance on talent, Gordon is a better player than Britt and the Patriots won’t be afraid to quickly cut ties if it’s not working out.
