The WWE made a great move to have Becky Lynch win the title at Hell in a Cell, but now it needs to let the Irish Lasskicker keep the belt.

Becky Lynch’s victory over Charlotte Flair at Hell in a Cell was a pleasant surprise for WWE fans. No one really expected the popular redhead to get the nod over the company’s most prized female competitor. The WWE’s job isn’t done, though.

Now they need to give Lynch an extended run with the title. There’s no other way for the company to see what she is really capable of doing. She already has a clear, meaningful connection with fans. That’s the first step toward establishing Lynch as someone who can make significant money for the company.

In truth, WWE started the momentum with Lynch by allowing her to turn heel against her former best friend. That kind of storyline has been a staple of professional wrestling for years, but it’s still reasonably new for the Women’s Division. Lynch and Flair had the history to pull the storyline off to perfection. Even so, it was somewhat surprising that WWE allowed one of the company’s rare, pure babyfaces to pull of a heel turn.

It seems likely that the crowd’s reaction to Lynch since the turn surprised the company. Instead of drawing pure heat for her heel comments about Flair’s entitlement, she continues to get a healthy dose of cheers. Devoted wrestling fans connect with Lynch’s sincere desire to work on her craft. It’s not that those fans dislike Flair. Instead, it’s that Lynch connects them on a more natural level. It’s easier for the average WWE fan to connect to an underdog than someone who is blessed with one of the biggest family names in the business.

The question now is whether or not WWE has the nerve to really give Lynch the push she deserves. The safe move would be to allow Flair to continue their feud and immediately win the belt back in an upcoming pay per view. The Evolution event on Oct. 28th would be an easy time to switch the belt back. It shouldn’t happen that way.

Instead, the company needs to understand the opportunity it has to create a star who is capable of interacting with Flair on equal footing for the next decade. If it gives Lynch the room to grow into her Championship reign, it’s going to end up with a big star on their hands. If WWE elects to cut her title run short, she’ll fade back into the morass of the Women’s Division. This is Lynch’s time to shine. Let’s hope the WWE agrees.
