Mike Wallace hasn’t made much impact over two games, but his potential season-ending injury has the Eagles thin at wide receiver.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Mike Wallace in the offseason, perhaps with some vision he could be a new DeSean Jackson-like deep threat. He went catchless on three targets in Week 1, then made an eight-yard reception early in Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers. But the play was negated by a penalty, and Wallace suffered an ankle injury too.

It seemed to be a serious injury, as Wallace was carted off the field. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network was first with the news Wallace would be out for “a while,” and ESPN’s Adam Schefter  added Wallace could be out for the season.

The Eagles are awaiting Alshon Jeffery’s return from shoulder surgery, and Mack Hollins (groin) was placed on injured reserve before the season opener. Braxton Miller was added to the practice squad last week, but Wallace’s injury creates an additional need at wide receiver for the Eagles.

An intriguing option who is now out there is Josh Gordon. The Cleveland Browns announced an intention to release him over the weekend , with subsequent reports they are trying to trade him and have gotten a fair amount of interest. The Eagles may not be willing to take on the inherent risk attached to Gordon, even with Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reporting Sunday he is not facing another suspension from the league.

Of course Dez Bryant is also available, and the Eagles have gotten a close look at his decline (real or perceived) over the last couple years by facing the Cowboys twice a year. He has his own past baggage, but nothing like Gordon’s in terms of essentially being one step away from out of the league.

A loss on Sunday was bad enough, but the Eagles are now even thinner at wide receiver with Wallace out at least indefinitely.
