QUINTET 3 features big names in grappling and MMA
Urijah Faber, Kazushi Sakuraba, Craig Jones and the Martinez brothers are just some of the names planned for this team grappling event.
September has already been an insanely busy month for the world of competitive grappling. Not only are amazing matches happening across multiple organizations, but these same promotions are making plans for a strong close to 2018. QUINTET isn’t falling behind as the organization created by MMA legend, Kazushi Sakuraba has announced the teams for its upcoming QUINTET 3 scheduled on October 3. The men poised to step on the mat have a wealth of experience across multiple disciplines and will be familiar to many MMA fans.
Team Sakuraba is back with the aforementioned Hall of Famer as their team captain. The group also features additional QUINTET veterans including former UFC champion, Josh Barnett, Daisuke Nakamura, Marcos Souza and Roberto Satoshi Souza. It will be interesting to see how teams deal with Souza, who had an excellent performance during his last performance and comes in with the most competitive grappling success across the team.
But no one can discount Team Polaris, which won a QUINTET team tournament earlier this year. Marcin Held, Gregor Gracie, Craig Jones and Dan Strauss return to the group; ready to take home another team title. This time they are bringing in another heavy hitter as ADCC bronze medalist and multiple-time IBJJF world champion known simply as “Shaolin.” Vitor Ribeiro is an exceptional competitor that has shown he can perform well in nearly any type of rule set and his addition is sure to attract fans across the grappling industry.
Fans of mixed martial arts will recognize the name, Urijah Faber. The former WEC and multiple-time UFC title challenger is bringing a group of grapplers from his unit, Team Alpha Male. This group includes Kelly Anundsen, Mansher Khera, Dustin Akbari and Antoine Jaoude. It will be interesting to see how this unit’s skill set translates to the specific rules and strategy involved within the QUINTET grappling series.
The team led by Eddie Bravo is also back as 10th Planet is coming back to defend the team title that they won at QUINTET 2. Led by the brother duo of Geo and Richie Martinez, they are joined by PJ Barch, Adam Sachnoff and Amir Allam. They came in and put on a grappling clinic in early July, which set off a social media back and forth with Team Polaris immediately after. It will be interesting to see if these two teams meet in the tournament as they not only represent themselves but the promotions in which they widely compete.
Also, grappling ace, Nicky Ryan and Hideo Tokoro will face off in a special one on one match.
QUINTET 3 is set for October 3 from the New Orleans Arena and with names such as those mentioned above, it’s sure to attract fans of both grappling and professional mixed martial arts. The show is available for streaming on demand via the UFC Fight Pass platform.
