Monaco face Atletico Madrid at Stade Louis-II on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The Champions League kicks off on Tuesday with Atletico Madrid traveling to Monaco. The two clubs enter the game, both believing they can advance out of the group stage. Monaco and Atleti both finished a distant second in their domestic leagues last season to qualify for the Champions League.
Following a run to the Champions League semifinal in 2016-17, Monaco sold most of their young stars. Last year, Monaco had a disastrous Champions League campaign, finishing last in their group. Domestically, Monaco have got off to an awful start to the season. After winning the first game of the season, the Red and Whites have not won a game, drawing twice and losing twice.
Injuries have really hit Monaco hard to start the season. Pietro Pellegri, Stevan Jovetic, Rony Lopes and Aleksandr Golovin are all unlikely to play. The injuries to many of their attacking players will put added pressure on Falcao and Youri Tielemans to create goals. The two players are tied for the team lead with two goals. Leonardo Jardim held Falcao out of Monaco’s 1-1 draw with Toulouse on Saturday.
After reaching the final twice since 2014, Atletico failed to get out of the group stage last year. Atletico finished third in their group and dropped won to the Europa League. Diego Simeone’s side won their third Europa League title to qualify for Champions League. Atleti have had a poor start to the season, picking up only five points in their first four games. The Mattress Makers have struggled to score goals domestically, only scoring three times. Atletico will try to kick-start their attack with Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann will continue to lead the line against Monaco. A player to watch on Tuesday will be Thomas Lemar, who moved to Atletico in the summer after they bought the winger from Monaco.
