Napoli open up their Champions League campaign Tuesday in Belgrade to take on Red Star in what should be a competitive match for new manager Carlo Ancelotti.
The Partenopei come into the game on a high after defeating Fiorentina 1-0 this past Saturday in Serie A. The win, thanks to a Lorenzo Insigne goal, came on the heels of a devastating 3-0 defeat to Sampdoria before the international break two weeks ago. Napoli are currently in second place with nine points, three behind league leaders Juventus.
While Napoli remain contenders for the league title, the Champions League is a different matter. Last season, Napoli failed to get to the tournament’s knockout stage after being placed in a group that featured Manchester City. This season, Napoli have been placed in Group C along with Liverpool, runners up last season, and PSG.
Red Star Star Belgrade, meanwhile, return to the competition for the first time 26 years. Winners of the European Cup in 1991, Red Star make their Champions League group-stage debut against Napoli. They, too, are coming off a league win after defeating Radnik Surdulika 6-0 in the Serbian SuperLiga. The club, the defending league champions, are currently in first place with 21 points.
Red Star Belgrade are unbeaten in six European home games (3-3-0) coming into this match, meaning Napoli could have a very difficult time as last season’s group-stage road matches ultimately proved in the end.
