College football conference power rankings: Week 4
It’s been said before that the more things change, the more they stay the same. That adage is especially true as it pertains to the SEC and their dominance over college football. Talent leaves, coaches come and go, but this is still clearly the best conference in the sport, as they have been for quite some time.
That, of course, all starts at the top. Though they are ranked first and third, respectively, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs are the two best teams in college football this season, and showed again why that’s so. Alabama’s win over SEC foe Ole Miss surely was more emphatic, but the Dawgs went out and handled business with ease against Middle Tennessee as well.
Furthermore, the LSU Tigers are proving time and again that they might be back as they moved to 3-0 with a win over conference-rival Auburn. With a one-point margin of victory, however, it’s clear both of these teams are still among the better Power 5 teams in the country. Throw in the likes of ranked Mississippi State, 3-0 Kentucky and Missouri and improving Florida and Tennessee teams, and there are things to like about the mid-tier teams in the SEC as well.
Yes, Ole Miss might not be as good as we thought. Moreover, Arkansas is absolutely abysmal as they were trounced by North Texas in Week 3. Having said that, when you look at the strength of the top of the SEC and the depth of good teams beneath the heavy-hitters, this is clearly the best conference by a wide margin after three weeks of the season.
