Manchester City have been dealt a tricky hand this year, drawing a group containing Shakhtar Donetsk, Hoffenheim and opening night opponents Lyon. It’s a group in which they can afford few slip ups, with any shock defeat likely to be punished by their group rivals.

Between 2006 and 2010, they reached two quarterfinals and a semifinal, knocking Real Madrid out in two of those seasons.
Lyon are no longer the power house they used to be. They haven’t won the league title since 2008 and no longer possess the established names they boasted 10 years ago. However, the home side shouldn’t take Lyon for granted with Memphis Depay and Bertrand Traore providing a quick, sharp attack that would trouble any defense in this competition.
