We all had a rough week this week with 38 points leading the way. Irish Dawgs & Ducks and pitt2534 tied for the top honor this week. I finished fourth on the week with 34 points, and moved into a tie for fourth with mnsooners. We are six points behind Irish Dawgs & Ducks, who took over the lead from Brian Prete this week. Jay da gr8 1 is holding down third place.
Again, there were no clean sweeps, but 22 out of 23 of use took the Irish over Vanderbilt. 21 of us took Oklahoma for the good and Auburn for the bad. Congrats go to Irish Dawgs & Ducks and mdaallen, the only two to pick LSU.
These picks will be for the confidence version of the game, where you assign a point value from 1-10 based on how confident you are in each pick. I will publish mine here each week. If I make a change, I will just amend the original article.
This is going to be an interesting week since mos of the road teams in these ten games are favored. Welcome to the first week of the conference season for most!
(1) Indiana over Michigan State:
This is another road game for Sparty, who lost one of these to Arizona State when we last saw them on a football field. Indiana wiped the field with a pretty good Ball State team. This comes down to the Spartans not looking very good in either game. It will take a really good game from the improved Indiana defense to win this one, but the home crowd is going to be stoked. As long as Indiana keeps this close, I like the home crowd to help clinch the win.
(2) Vanderbilt over South Carolina:
These two teams look pretty even to me. Vandy hung tough with Notre Dame last week. South Carolina lost their game as the state was ravaged by Hurricane Florence. Looking at this, I like Vandy’s receivers, particularly Kalija Lipscomb, better than anyone the Gamecocks have. I think this stays really close, but Vanderbilt seems to have the better playmakers.
(3) Wisconsin over Iowa
If I trusted the Iowa offense at all I would pick them. The Wisconsin defense is good. The run game is good. These teams are pretty much a mirror of each other. Neither can pass to win. Hornibrook did in the bowl game last year, and that’s the only time. I trust the Wisconsin running game more, so I think they win a trench battle in Iowa City.
(4) Stanford over Oregon:
The Oregon defense still isn’t all that good, and Justin Herbert can be pressured into mistakes. I was not at all impressed with Oregon against a San Jose State team that was firmly in my bottom ten. Bryce Love took a week off, so he will be well rested to gouge this Oregon defense.
(5) Washington over Arizona State
Vegas really likes the Huskies at home, but I think this game is closer than the spread says. That said, Manny Wilkins can be and often is pressured into mistakes. The Michigan State defense didn’t make him pay, but Washington’s can.
(6) Florida over Tennessee:
Neither team has looked good, but Tennessee struggling to move the ball against a UTEP team that lost by 20 to FCS Northern Arizona is a new level of low for a SEC team. UTEP wouldn’t even be favored against any FCS top 25 team at home right now. Don’t believe me? Ask Vegas. This is going to be a completely ugly offensive game on both sides and a low scoring affair, but Florida is moderately less ugly.
(7) Notre Dame over Wake Forest:
Notre Dame’s defense continues to impress, but this offense is going to cost them a game. Not here though. Wake’s defense was torched by Boston College last week. As much as I like the Wake offense, I don’t see them getting much on the Irish D. Wake may keep it close for a while, but the Irish likely pull away.
(8) TCU over Texas
Honestly, I was impressed by both squads last week. The Texas defense looked solid, especially against the run, and this offense took it to USC. TCU hung with a really good Ohio State team. Last year, I thought Turpin was in a class by himself with his elite speed. Now TCU has three other guys just like him. There is just too much team speed for the Toadies for Texas to win this one. Their defense is going to be exposed by an offense that knows how to move the ball. USC does not.
(9) Troy over Louisiana-Monroe:
The Warhawks struggled with Southeast Louisiana and Southern Miss before getting blasted by A&M. Troy is coming off a big win in Lincoln. ULM wouldn’t have won that game. They may not have been able to keep it close. Once again, Troy seems to be the class of the Sun Belt. They prove it here.
(10) Mississippi State over Kentucky:
The Bulldogs have done whatever they please against everyone on offense, and have not allowed more than 10 points on defense. Before you go thinking that they scheduled like most of the rest of the SEC, they played Kansas State in Manhattan. That may not mean what it used to, but the Wildcats still have a stout defense. I’m not sure Kentucky does.
