After being promoted the Premier League, Fulham were expected to become a regular fixture in the league. The Cottagers have got off to a disappointing start this season, picking up only four points in their first five games. On Saturday, Fulham host Watford at Craven Cottage. The Hornets lost their first game of the season last weekend against Manchester United. Despite losing, Watford have still overachieved to this point in the season, sitting fourth with 12 points, ahead of many of the heavyweights.
Fulham were promoted to the Premier League in large part because of the signing of Aleksandar Mitrovic on loan from Newcastle. Mitrovic scored 12 goals in half a season with Fulham last year, leading the club to sign him to a permanent deal. This season, Mitrovic has continued scoring, finding the back of the net four times in five games. The problem for Fulham, only two other players have scored. Andre Schurrle has had a bounce-back season with Fulham scoring twice after a disappointing tenure with Borussia Dortmund, who sent him to Fulham on loan.
Watford had scored at least two goals in every game before losing 2-1 to United. Andre Gray and Troy Deeney have both played well to start the season, scoring twice. Roberto Pereyra has given the Hornets another scoring option, finding the back of the net three times. The question for Javi Garcia is how sustainable is this start for the Hornets. To continue their hot streak, Watford will have to continue scoring at their two goals a game pace and continue to play good in their own end. However, given the track record of their strikers, it is unlikely that they will be able to keep up the pace. While Watford will almost certainly not finish in the top six, if their hot streak continues, they will build a nice points cushion and likely avoid any relegation fight.
