Fantasy Hockey: Sabres Top Position Players

Hello and welcome back to another Fantasy Hockey Top Position Player preview. This time around we at FantasyCPR will take a look at the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres had a rough season in 2017-18 to say the least. Things are not all bad though as they are loaded with young talent. On top of that, they added the #1 draft prospect in the offseason. Hockey is a team sport, but adding a talent like Rasmus Dahlin could provide a spark that this club badly needs.

This exercise is intended to help you prepare for your Fantasy Hockey season by providing a team-by-team preview of potential leaders at each position. We will cover our favorite fantasy centers, wingers, defenseman, and goalies with a few honorable mentions.

Honorable Mentions – W Kyle Okposo, D Rasmus Ristolainen, C Sam Reinhart

C – Jack Eichel

It is hard to believe that Jack Eichel was a consolation prize in 2015. You can put just about anyone up against Connor McDavid though and end up second best. Eichel has been steady in his first three seasons putting up solid numbers all around. As the team builds around him, we should see drastic improvements in goals and assists. He led the team in both last season with 25 goals and 39 assists. He also led the team in shots on goal with 246 in just 67 games. In his fourth year in the league, with the addition of Skinner and #1 overall blue-liner Rasmus Dahlin, we may see a whole new beast in Eichel.

W – Jeff Skinner

Skinner has spent his entire career in Carolina and could be poised to jump right into first line duties in Buffalo. He has always had a knack for finding the net and should be a great piece in Buffalo’s attempt to get out as bottom-feeders. They have their young stud on offense in Eichel, and two stalwarts on the backend in Rasmus Ristolainen and Dahlin. Buffalo looks to be making the right moves this offseason, and we’ll see how that pays off for Skinner and fantasy owners. I expect 50+ points this season and am fairly confident if that top line stays healthy.

C/W – Casey Mittelstadt

I could have made this one easy and just talked about Kyle Okposo. Don’t get me wrong, he could be poised for a solid season. But let’s talk about a youngster, Casey Mittelstadt. He’s 19 years old and was drafted 8th overall in 2017.

He only appeared in six games last season, and boy did he show off the skills. Through those six games, Mittelstadt netted a goal and gave out four helpers. This team has become one of the youngest teams in the NHL and that will show on the ice, good and bad. There may be some bumps along the way with a steep learning curve. However, once these guys get it together. They could be scary for years to come.

D – Rasmus Dahlin

This may not be the Rasmus that you think should be here. Or maybe it is, who knows? The Sabres won the lottery for the 1st overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. There was never really any question that Dahlin’s generational talent would fall past the #1 pick no matter who won the lottery. In 2017 with Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, the then 17-year old had seven goals and 13 assists in 41 games. Dahlin may need to go through a bit of an adjustment period, but his offensive skills are unquestionable.

G Carter HuttonLinus UllmarkScott Wedgewood

It is unclear who the starter will be at this point. Hutton could be in line to start, but at 40, he might be on his last legs. This is a competition worth keeping an eye on as Buffalo could be a much improved team as their talent level increases.
