4. 2008-09 Vintage

Most fans may forget, but the Philadelphia Flyers actually reintroduced the modernized-vintage sweaters (1967-1982) as an alternate back in 2008-09. The orange-based sweater was a fan favorite from puck drop, especially in comparison to the team’s Reebok Edge jerseys.

With the return of a classic, the Flyers proudly took to the ice again in South Philadelphia donning of one the best sweaters in all of hockey. The sweater is ranked low on the list since the team has been wearing this design as the primary home jersey since 2009-10.

At the time, it was arguably the best third jersey in the NHL back in 2008-09. The Flyers also proved how clever they can be since the team was planning on wearing the white vintage sweater for the 2010 Winter Classic against the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park.

That allowed the Flyers to retire the white Reebok Edge jersey for the followings season, and the team has carried the modernized throwbacks since.

The Flyers and Edmonton Oiler were both teams that introduced throwback jerseys as alternates that same season, and it’s probably no coincidence that more and more teams around the league are doing the same – and eventually reintroducing the respective vintage sweaters as their primaries.

Look no further than the Flyers rivals in the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Hopefully, the Flyers hold onto this vintage design for as long as they can. Luckily, Philadelphia didn’t reintroduce a newly designed sweater once Adidas took over the jersey rights in 2017.
