1. Original Black Alternates

While the mid-to-late 1990’s were an interesting time period for NHL teams and their respective jerseys, the Philadelphia Flyers were one of the few teams that entailed an awesome alternate jersey.

A number of teams from both the Western and Eastern Conference unveiled third jerseys by the time the 1997-98 season rolled around, but there were a handful of teams that mistakenly introduced controversial black alternate jerseys.

Still, the Flyers original black alternate jersey does down as the team’s best and was more than likely used as inspiration for the team’s latest third jersey.

The original black alternate was the same layout and designed used for the Flyers’ primary jerseys during that period (1997-2007). Philadelphia just replaced the orange road jerseys with black as the primary base color, and added orange piping to the “wings” that ran down the jersey’s sleeves.

The jersey quickly became a fan favorite and really popped due to the color scheme and use of white along the arms of the sweater. The numbers and players’ nameplates were on point, too.

The white lettering and numbers were outlined with orange, which was no doubtingly appealing. The main crest was larger than the team’s logo from the home and away jersey at the time, which acted as a subtle and positive trait.

The City of Brotherly Love truly embraced the original black alternate and even began wearing on a normal-basis for road games in 1999-00. By the time the 2000 Stanley Cup Playoffs arrived, the Flyers retired the orange road jerseys in favor of the black sweater.
