Pac-12 power rankings, Week 5: Stanford surges, Oregon chokes, USC battles back
By Brad Weiss
For all of those people writing off USC for dead, especially after losing to both Texas and Stanford the last two weeks, they were disappointed by the Trojans this weekend. The Trojans stepped up in a monster gut-check game against the Washington State Cougars, and they bent but did not break, beating the Cougars inside the Coliseum by the score of 39-36.
For USC, the win could not come at a bigger time for the program, who got a big game from true freshman quarterback JT Daniels in this one. Daniels threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns against Washington State, matching Cougars start Gardner Minshew pass for pass, as he brought home the biggest win of his short college career.
USC will go on the road this upcoming weekend, as they travel to Arizona, where they will take on another standout quarterback in Khalil Tate. It was a huge second half for this program against Washington State, and with all the ups and downs already in the Pac-12 this season, the Trojans certainly are not out of the race for the championship game just yet.
The California Golden Bears were off this past weekend, but they did get some good news on Monday, as they were ranked in the top-25 of the latest AP Poll. Quarterback Chase Garbers has stepped in as the full-time starter nicely, and he will need to continue his strong play this weekend, as they welcome fellow top-25 team Oregon to town in a huge matchup for both teams.
