With all the turmoil over the change in directors for the 25th James Bond film, speculation also swirls about a possible change in the lead role.

Daniel Craig may grow tiresome of the drama of Bond 25 and the film may be his last. In addition to the drama surrounding Bond 25, Daniel Craig is moving into his 50’s and the direction of the films may be changing. So, if Craig is out after Bond 25 who will take the reins?

Henry Cavill

Cavill certainly fits the aesthetic of Bond being tall dark and classically handsome.  Cavill’s largest roles are in three DC Comics films playing the iconic Superman. Perhaps the most interesting

piece on his resume is his appearance as Napoleon Solo in Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Solo is a CIA agent during the Cold War era that is tasked with extracting a VIP from East Berlin.  Of all the currently speculated candidates, Cavill may have the inside track.

Idris Elba

Elba’s name has been floated around for quite some time now and he’d done nothing to quell the rumors. Elba is an excellent actor with a great resume including  Beat of No Nation, several Marvel movies as Heimdall and Prometheus.  Elba has experience playing a CIA agent in The Take as well so the spy type of role wouldn’t be out of his realm of experience. The one issue I could see with Elba playing James Bond is that he’s the oldest of the candidates at 46.  If the Bond team is looking for a new actor as a long-term Bond, Elba may be out. With the success of the high-octane “Mission Impossible: Fallout”, perhaps EON will be looking for a younger Bond.

Richard Madden

Madden may be most famous for playing Robb Stark in the Game of Throne TV series on HBO.  The most pertinent role on his resume though is the one he’s just wrapping up with the final episode of Bodyguard.  The series follows Madden’s character, David Budd, on his various adventures as an agent of the Specialist Protection Branch of the London Metropolitan Police. What I can gather the role is similar in many ways to being a Secret Service agent.  Madden would also be the youngest of the three on this list at only 32. Madden could be a possibility if the James Bond franchise wanted to explore younger Bond adventures that take place prior to any of the existing films. Madden could easily pass for being in his mid to late 20’s.

Wrapping it up

All three have their strengths and weaknesses but all three have experience playing a character in the spy/espionage realm. Elba has the most extensive resume, Madden and Cavill are rising stars. If any of the three end up being the next Bond it will likely be dependent on the direction the films are going.
