Borussia Dortmund

After a dismal season in which they finished fourth, Dortmund have appointed Lucien Favre in order to take them back to being the main rivals of Bayern Munich for the league title. They have certainly started in promising fashion with eight points in four games with only two goals conceded.

Taking down the Bavarians will be a tough task in and of itself due to the quality they have throughout the team, but Dortmund could pull it off. The squad is young but there’s talent throughout with players such as Christian Pulisic, Julian Weigl and Manuel Akanji. There is plenty of potential for long-term development as well due to the young talents in the squad; Jadon Sancho and Sergio Gomez are two examples of players waiting in the wings to become stars in the first-team.

The summer transfer business improved the spine of the team as well. Axel Witsel was brought in to anchor the midfield while Thomas Delaney provides a varied skillset and Paco Alcacer is a significant goal threat. Abdou Diallo, Marwin Hitz, Marius Wolf and Achraf Hakimi add quality depth to the squad, so they can compete on multiple fronts as well as be consistent throughout the league season because injuries shouldn’t have too much impact.

They are also an interesting team to use due to the variety of tactical setups that could be used. The key aspect is the midfield due to the different types of players they have in that area, which enables them to be flexible tactically. Potential options include a high pressing 4-1-4-1 with Shinji Kagawa and Thomas Delaney as the advanced midfielders, a possession-based 4-3-3 with Julian Weigl, Mahmoud Dahoud and Mario Gotze or a counter-attacking 3-4-3 with Weigl and Witsel.

Dortmund can essentially be moulded into whichever desired set-up as well as providing the option to make in-game tweaks if a different approach is required, so they are a fascinating option to use.
