DraftKings Early MLB Picks September 26: Use the young lefties, not the old one

There are only three games in our early DraftKings tournament today, and pitching is on the bad side of horrible. Wei-Yin Chen is the second highest priced pitcher, and he is on the road where he has a 9.29 ERA in 12 games this season. No thanks. I’ll take a chance on literally anyone else before I use Chen on the road. Anyway, that gives you a hint on what to expect. This is going to be ugly, but if you don’t mind winning ugly, there is some goodness to be had if you know where to find it. That’s what we are going to try to figure out!

God may show mercy on Chen and rain out his start. The chance for rain in D.C. is never less than 50% through the night. If this plays, it’s going to be a mess in more ways than one.

If the roof is open in Toronto, there is going to be a nasty 18 mph wind in from left. Keep an eye on this one.

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on!

MIAMI, FL – SEPTEMBER 20: Cody Reed #25 of the Cincinnati Reds throws a pitch in the first inning against the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park on September 20, 2018 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Mark Brown/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Framber Valdez ($7,600): Valdez has a 2.08 ERA over eight major league appearances (five starts). He wont go deep into the game, but Valdez is going to record a whole lot of outs while he is in there. The Blue Jays have only mustered four runs in the first two games of this series. Valdez is by far the safest option of the afternoon, and likely has the most upside as well.

Cody Reed ($6,700): Reed has been strong for the Reds lately, racking up 54.2 DraftKings points over his last two starts. Welcoming the Royals to town certainly looks like Reed will continue his strong run here. However, his ERA is over a run worse at home, and the Royals do have some decent right handed power in their lineup. Still, on a short slate, Reed’s arm is as live as anyone’s out here.

Middle Tier:

Sean Reid-Foley ($6,500): How much you want to bet that Reid-Foley begs management to leave the roof open? A 18 mph headwind towards the right handed batters could really help. At any rate, I would use Reid-Foley over Chen. Reid-Foley has been far from consistent, but the did beat the Yankees. I’m thinking Houston does pretty well against him, but at least Reid-Foley has really good strikeout upside.

Heath Fillmyer ($6,200): Fillmyer has had some really bad outings on the road, but his last outing in Pittsburgh went for 17 DraftKings points. Facing one less hitter really seemed to agree with the youngster. Cincinnati is an all or nothing lineup, so there is certainly a chance they get to Fillmyer. However, considering Fillmyer has 37.9 DraftKings points in his last two outings, I think he’s worth the risk.

Bargain Pitchers:

Just walk away. Leave it alone. Trust me on this one!

WASHINGTON, DC – SEPTEMBER 02: Mark Reynolds #14 of the Washington Nationals singles in tow runs in the third inning during a baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Nationals Park on September 2, 2018 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Mitchell Layton/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

It’s open season on Wei-Yin Chen if this game gets played. I already mentioned what a disaster he has been on the road. Trea Turner has a pair of homers off of Chen. Mark Reynolds has three in just 12 at bats! Difo and Michael Taylor have the others. I have to think that if the field is sloppy the Nats will hold out Harper and Soto. Stack righties and watch the points pile up on Chen!

The Astros are too cheap. All of them. Not a one is over $5,000! Bregman at $4,300 stands out as a particularly underpriced option. We don’t have to worry about paying up for pitching, so Springer, Gurriel, Correa, and Altuve are all going to be in my lineup as well because I doubt the Nationals play.

Middle Tier:

I’m probably leaving Cincinnati righties alone here, but Scooter Gennett and Scott Schebler still look like good options. In a day where there may not be a ton of homers, Billy Hamilton could be a sneaky play, but we likely don’t need to go that cheap.

Salvador Perez is in play if he is in the lineup. Since this game starts just 20 minutes before the main slate, I would expect the Royals to put their normal lineup out there. Merrifield and Mondesi look like good options too, but I don’t really expect Reed to have a poor outing, so don’t go too crazy.

Bargain Shoppers:

If Jonathan Davis leads off for Toronto again, he is worth using at his very low price. Devon Travis and Aledmys Diaz are solid punt plays as well.

I have no idea what the Nationals are going to throw out there after McGowin this afternoon, nor do I care. The Marlins are cheap, and this is a day to use them if the game plays. Dietrich, Brian Anderson, J.T. Riddle, and Austin Dean are all very affordable and should be in the lineup somewhere. I want to see how the lineup looks and use slots 1-5 in the Marlins lineup to fill in around Nationals bats.
