7. Season 9
Season 9’s top shelf episodes came toward the end of the second half with back-to-back classics “Daddy Issues” (episode 18) and “CHiPs and Salsa” (episode 19). Modern Family went the extra mile into dark, twisted humor on “Daddy’s Issues” with a cruel prank played by Gloria to prove that she gets mean humor too. It all starts innocently enough when Gloria has an ex by the name of Jorge over the house, who just happens to look exactly like an older version of Manny, complete with Manny’s personality traits and quirks. Initially before meeting Jorge, Jay expected an ex more similar to Gloria’s ex-husband Javier Delgado. He saw the whole thing as Gloria unconsciously testing him to show who the better man is. After meeting Jorge and asking about the on and off time Jorge saw Gloria, Jay believes Jorge is actually Manny’s real father.
He ponders how to break the news, and has a heart to heart with Manny where he tells him he’ll still always be his son no matter what, and then Gloria starts diabolically laughing! It turns out Jorge is just a butcher she noticed looked like Manny and decided to get him in on a joke. Jorge genuinely feels bad about being part of the whole thing, while Gloria continues laughing telling Jay and Manny, “So who gets mean humor now?”
To follow up the blockbuster episode, Modern Family went with “CHiPs and Salsa,” where Jay tries to convince Gloria to sell her failing salsa business to Haley’s boss. Gloria is reluctant, citing it being a family recipe but agrees to go to the meeting if she doesn’t have to sell to help Haley. Jay tries to butter up Haley’s boss early to lean the decision of buying to a yes. It’s then Gloria gives an impassioned speech, showing the family lineage and history of the salsa in what looks like a prod to Jay to step in to stop the sale. Jay does as such, only to have Gloria yell at him outside that she was trying to more or less con Haley’s boss into buying the salsa business! It turns out Jay fell for the act and they desperately go back inside trying to ask for another chance, unfortunately Haley’s boss actually has an allergic reaction to the salsa.
In a separate plot-line on the episode, Cam is all excited to go on a police ride-along courtesy of Mitchell’s connections. Yet, the office does not take a liking to his forced cop lingo and actually puts him in the backseat as Mitchell does the actual police work while Cam is forgotten. It’s a fun diversion and parody of the classic CHiPs TV series. Meanwhile, Luke initially doesn’t see a point in going to college since he already has a house now, why buy his own? That is until Phil and Claire’s constant competing actually pushes him to change his mind.
