5. Season 8

Modern Family’s eighth season started off on an epic note over in New York City in expertly stitched premiere episode “A Tale of Three Cities” with three hilarious first class storylines in one. The best of the three easily being Mitchell getting blamed for Cam’s grandma’s death after she grips his hand while on life support and he asks her to “let go,” she passes right after and Mitchell’s phrase is blamed as the reason. Mitchell doesn’t help matters when during a heated conversation he loudly asks to just “drop it” as Cam’s family carries the grandma’s casket!

Meanwhile, Gloria and Jay attend a wedding where Jay accidentally tells Gloria’s sister about her salsa business. It’s the last straw for Sonia who promptly kidnaps Manny as a revenge tactic. Gloria however, is not worried, saying these kind of kidnappings are common and she’s not getting her salsa business. Sonia eventually returns Manny after he seems to develop some type of attraction to his aunt and she in general tires of him. It turns out Gloria was the one jealous of Sonia all along for being her father’s favorite which is why she prevented her from starting her own business.

Going back to New York is a classic 80s-esque comedy where both Phil and Claire along with their children agree not to stay more days and say their goodbyes. But both actually stay in New York the whole time, unknowingly in next door hotel rooms no less. Eventually Phil and Luke can’t keep the secret any longer and tell the truth to each other.

Season 8 featured an episode titled “Five Minutes” (episode 18) that started off with a lighthearted classic scene with Mitch and Cam taking sleeping pills only to have to switch flights as hilarity ensured. Including an old-school comedy bit where they ask to be driven to the gate that’s a 10 second walk at best. Yet, ended with an out of character devastating scene in which Haley and the older weatherman Rainer both realize their relationship is at an impasse because of age. That Haley is not really ready to get married yet and what looks to be an engagement ends in the end of a relationship, leaving a surreal bittersweet moment for Modern Family.
