2. Season 6

Season 6 ranks second on this list for one primary reason, the introduction of Gloria’s jealous sister Sonia Ramirez (Stephanie Beatriz) in “Valentine’s Day 4: Twisted Sister” (episode 14). Quite simply this episode owns universal appeal even if one has never caught a single episode of Modern Family before.

The episode starts off innocently enough with Gloria inviting Sonia to dinner along with Jay, who notices she’s sad and gives her a present he actually originally bought for his dog Stella. Sonia sinks to an opportunity with Jay who she thinks wants to be with her and soon starts hitting on him. Though Jay tells Gloria, she doesn’t believe it, saying its his ego and he’s being crazy. It’s when Gloria sprains her ankle, that Sonia decides to have dinner with Jay all to herself! Manny even picks up on a feeling that Sonia wants him out of the way too, so it’s just her and Jay forever and ever.

Eventually, Sonia and Gloria fight over Jay and a secret is revealed: Gloria really did steal what should have been Sonia’s life all along, “How dare you try to steal the life I stole from you!”

Meanwhile, Mitch and Cam want to keep the gift they’re bringing over when they find out the couple they’re bringing it for is in the midst of divorcing. After a series of quality old-school physical comedy, they make away with the present in a classic bit. It’s one of Modern Family’s best episodes of all time and brings season 6 to number No. 2 on this list. The episode was directed by The Wonder Years star Fred Savage with writing by Jeffrey Richman.
