Things are always prone to get a little wild when it comes to college football, and that could surely happen in Week 5 if these bold predictions come about.
Unfortunately, we’re already nearing the midway point of the 2018 college football season. I know that doesn’t seem possible, but with so few games on the schedule, it’s the reality that we face coming into the fifth week of action. However, that also means that we’re in the heart of the season, and we all know that’s when things really start to heat up from top-to-bottom throughout the country.
We’re going to see things heat up in a big way on Saturday in Week 5 action as there are a number of big-time matchups to watch. Both Stanford vs. Notre Dame and Ohio State vs. Penn State will feature top-10 clashes. However, there are also intriguing matchups elsewhere like the LSU defense being put to the test by the Ole Miss offense or a fascinating matchup between Oregon and California.
The point is, this is the time of year in college football where things really start to matter. Another example of that is the Clemson Tigers taking on the Syracuse Orange, the only team to beat them in the regular season last year. It’s time for big conference matchups, and that means massive games with even bigger ramifications. As such, the madness that we’re accustomed too only gets more prevalent across the land.
So why not continue to have fun and try to predict a bit of that madness? These are a quintet of bold predictions for college football Week 5 and, though they are indeed bold, I sure wouldn’t second-guess me — unless they’re wrong, then you have my permission.
5. Georgia beats Tennessee by 50+
SEC fans are surely familiar with the fact that the Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee Volunteers have a long-standing rivalry. Obviously there are plenty of those throughout one of the most prestigious conferences in any sport, but the Dawgs and Vols certainly stand out as two teams that have long been at it with one another. And because of that rivalry, it would stand to reason that, despite the current status of both teams entering their Week 5 matchup, it could be a close one.
The oddsmakers certainly don’t think that will be the case as Georgia enters this game as over 30-point favorites against Tennessee. Having said that, if you ask many fans of either team, they would probably say that line is a little too high. With so much emotion and history involved with these two teams up against one another, it won’t be a blowout. Again though, that’s if you ask many other people.
If you ask me, however, the line for this game isn’t high enough. Georgia has looked like one of the two best teams in the country to this point (hence why they’re ranked second in the AP Top 25) and Tennessee has looked like a mediocre-at-best group.
To me, there is no level that the Volunteers are going to be able to keep up with the Bulldogs. Georgia’s defense is going to harass the Vols on every level and their offense is going to move the ball at will. As such, this won’t be much of a game at all with the Bulldogs winning in demoralizingly emphatic fashion.
