College football power rankings: Predicting the AP Top 25 after Week 5
Malik Rosier may be lobbying for his starting quarterback job, but he was replaced in Week 5 by freshman N’Kosi Perry who passed for 125 yards and a touchdown on 8-of-12 completions. He only needed 12 pass attempts and the Hurricanes still came away with a 47-10 blowout win over North Carolina on Thursday night. Oh yeah, and the Turnover Chain was in full effect as the Canes finished with six takeaways.
Things were looking grim for Michigan in Evanston on Saturday evening, but the Wolverines were able to overcome a 17-point deficit to shut the Wildcats out in the second half. Shea Patterson got the job done more with his legs than his arm and Karan Higdon broke the 100-yard mark again. The Wolverines have now won four straight, but they flirted with danger against Northwestern here.
South Bend has proven to be a menacing destination for visitors and that proved to be true yet again as Notre Dame was able to handle Stanford in a Week 5 battle of top-10 teams. It looked more like a one-sided affair as the Irish won convincingly. KJ Costello had his worst game of the young season and Bryce Love remained quiet yet again. The Cardinal may still have a long way to go, but luckily this doesn’t count against their conference title hopes.
Hosting a Pitt team that has been down on its luck this season, the UCF Knights had their way with the Power Five opponent, surprising no one. The Knights, led by McKenzie Milton, pieced together a 45-14 dominating win over the Panthers and they’re starting to look like a top-10 team. Scott Frost is probably wishing he was back in Orlando these days.
There was a long delay which may have stopped any momentum the Tigers had, but Auburn returned and held on to beat Southern Miss in a non-conference battle. It wasn’t the most impressive win and it’ll drop the Tigers just slightly in the rankings thanks to a couple of ranked wins from teams just behind them. It was a rough week for Auburn, but hey, a win’s a win.
