Bayern Munich face Ajax at Allianz Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The most successful clubs in Germany and the Netherlands meet in Munich on Tuesday as Bayern Munich host Ajax. The six-time reigning Germany champions opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win against Benfica. Ajax also won their opening game, beating AEK 3-0.
Bayern had a tough week, tying Augsburg 1-1 on Tuesday and then losing 2-0 to Hertha Berlin on Friday. The loss moved Bayern into second place behind Borussia Dortmund. Part of the problem for Niko Kovac is the lack of full-back depth behind Joshua Kimmich and David Alaba. The only other full-back on the roster is Rafinha, who is out with an injury. With Tuesday’s game being Bayern’s third in a week, the full-backs will be tested by an Ajax team that attacked AEK’s full-backs, leading to two goals.
Bayern will design their attack around getting Robert Lewandowski the ball. The Polish striker leads Bayern with eight goals in all competitions. Kovac elected to keep Thomas Muller on the bench for the first half against Hertha. The German international should be relatively fresh for Tuesday’s game.
Ajax easily beat AEK in the opening game behind two Nicolás Tagliafico goals. The Ajax left-back was able to get behind the defenders to give the Dutch side a much-needed win. Domestically, Ajax lost 3-0 to PSV two weeks ago to sit behind their biggest rivals in the Eredivisie table.
Manager Erik ten Hag has relied on the front three of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Dusan Tadic, and Hakim, Ziyech. The trio has combined for 22 goals in Ajax’s 14 games across all competitions this season. However, the game will be a big test for Huntelaar, who has scored 10 goals this season. Huntelaar struggled his last season in the Bundesliga with Schalke, scoring only two goals.
