Dallas Stars season opener: Date, time, TV
By C.L. Kohuss
The Dallas Stars will begin their new campaign of 2018 at home against the Arizona Coyotes. Check below for details.
After what seems as always to be eons in-between the off-season and the regular season, the NHL is finally back — and if you’ve been waiting anxiously for football but out of the gate your team is trash, well hockey probably couldn’t come soon enough. Here we are with open arms.
While the season will officially kick off on Wednesday, Oct. 3, your Dallas Stars get started on Thursday. Interesting note, this will be the eighth consecutive year that Dallas has opened its new run at home, with the last road start coming against the New Jersey Devils back in 2010 (!).
Before we check out the opponent, let’s dive a tad into the goings on of the summer and preseason. The biggest news of course is that the Stars finally reached out to Tyler Seguin and gave him an extension. Counting this year, he’ll be around for the next nine. They also didn’t sit idle during free agency, adding former Boston Bruins goaltender Anton Khudobin, Colorado Avalanche forward Blake Comeau and Toronto Maple Leafs
pylon
defenseman Roman Polak.
Dallas will also sport new faces up from the minor ranks. 2015 second-rounder Roope Hintz showed out in the preseason and looks to have made the club (for now), while 2017 third overall selection Miro Heiskanen comes over from Finland to nab his place on the blue line. Oh yeah, and they have a new head coach in Jim Montgomery, which you can definitely read all about right here. On the other side, the Arizona Coyotes come in having ended their preseason with a record of 4-2-1, after finishing eighth in the Pacific Division with 70 points. They too made some hay over the summer, as they extended defenseman Oliver-Ekman Larsson for another eight years after trading 2013 first round pick Max Domi to the Montreal Canadiens for Alex Galchenyuk.
The 24-year-old Galchenyuk scored 51 points last season and hit the net 30 times back in 2015-16. Head coach Rick Tocchet will return for his second year behind the bench. One underrated move the Coyotes made? The signing of free agent Michael Grabner. While he won’t produce the highest point totals, he heads to the desert having knotted 27 goals in each of the last two seasons. Arizona finished the 2017-18 campaign 30th in goals for.
