Manchester City beat Hoffenheim 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Manchester City fought back from a goal down to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday. They dominated most of the match, but needed David Silva’s late winner to save them from a second consecutive disappointing result in Europe.
City fell behind within the first minute of the match, as Hoffenheim forward Ishak Belfodil capitalized on a defensive breakdown (the first of several throughout the match) to give his side an unexpected lead.
Pep Guardiola’s side responded impressively, however, quickly establishing control of possession and probing the gaps in Hoffenheim’s defense. They were level a little over five minutes later, Sergio Aguero finishing Leroy Sane’s cutback.
From there, it seemed City would ease to victory, but the German side proved stubborn opponents, and continued to cause City problems with their willingness to commit bodies forward in attack.
Raheem Sterling should have given City the lead when David Silva played him through with an excellent pass, and Aguero forced a good save out of Hoffenheim keeper Oliver Baumann in the 35th minute, but they couldn’t find a go-ahead goal.
Those proved to be two of City’s most presentable chances as the game progressed. They again bossed possession in the second half, but they couldn’t quite break down Hoffenheim’s back line, despite a lot of dangerous-looking possession in the final third.
The Citizens will also feel hard done by by a refereeing decision in the 72nd minute, when Baumann appeared to bring down Sane, only for the referee to award a goal kick. Replays showed there was contact.
With the match seemingly heading for a draw, City found a deserved winner in the 87th minute through David Silva, who picked up Bernardo Silva’s cross before firing into the bottom corner on the turn.
