The most surprising result from the first game of the group stage was Lyon beating Manchester City. The French club took advantage of the mistakes made by the Premier League champions to pick up three points and sit first in the group. On Tuesday, Lyon host Shakhtar Donetsk at Groupama Stadium. Shakhtar opened the tournament with a 2-2 draw against German side Hoffenheim.
Lyon drew with Nantes over the weekend, falling from second to fifth in the Ligue 1 table. Bertrand Traore has had a strong start to the Ligue 1 season, scoring four goals as part of Lyon’s high powered attack. Nabil Fekir showed why Liverpool were so interested in signing him during the summer against City. Fekir was the best player on either team, scoring the second goal to seal Lyon’s win. If Lyon can get Memphis Depay going, they should get out of the group. Depay scored 22 goals last season but has only scored once this season.
Shakhtar have got off to a great start in the Ukrainian league. Paulo Fonseca’s side have won nine of their first 10 games, and seven straight, to sit atop the table. Shakhtar can score goals in bunches. After scoring six goals in their most recent game, Shakhtar are up to 29 goals this season in their first 10 league games. Shakhtar could be in for another back and forth game with Lyon after a four-goal game with Hoffenheim. Junior Moraes and Marlos will lead the attack for the Ukrainian side. Moraes and Marlos have combined for 15 of Donetsk’s 29 league goals.
