PGA DFS Golf: 2018 Safeway Open Fanduel Targets
Welcome to this edition of PGA DFS Golf Fanduel Targets from FantasyCPR.com. Here you will find players to target for this weekend’s action, geared for cash games and tournament plays on Fanduel.
In this article, I will present to you some players to consider from each price tier for your PGA DFS action of Fanduel. Some plays will be geared toward cash games, and some for GPP. Some of course will also technically qualify as both. As we break each play down, I will be sure to specify which type of contests I am targeting that player in. I will give two players to target from the $10K-$12K, two targets from the $9K-$10K range, and two from the $8-9K range. Also don’t forget about those Bonus GPP Flyers at the very end.
Last Week:
Technically last week was the Ryder Cup as we all know, but for this article going forward, I think it would be fair to go over the last picks that were featured here. So while Tiger’s glorious victory is probably in the back of your mind by now, Let’s go back a couple of weeks and recap the Tour Championship.
Misses:
I’ll start with the bad calls, because honestly, it was a pretty good overall week. My GPP’s were severely hurt by Bubba Watson and his horrible performance, but my cash lineup was able to score over 500 FDP, and cash in all formats. Along with Bubba, other players featured in the “also consider” portion also did not perform well. Those players would be Brooks Koepka and Keegan Bradley, who were also GPP plays. The actual couple of recommendations that would be considered a miss would first of all be this week’s favorite, Patrick Cantlay. Cantlay finished at +1, and never really got anything going all weekend. We do however, expect him to excel in this field this weekend. The other was Bryson DeChambeau, who could not keep the magic going, finishing at -1 in 19th place.
Hits:
Plenty of goodness here on this side, as top cash plays Justin Rose and Webb Simpson did not disappoint, both finishing T-4 at -6. Xander Schauffele was the best value hit of the weekend, where he certainly was cash viable as suggested. He ended up -5 and T-7, easily paying off that $8,900 price tag. Tony Finau was so/so, as he did not hurt or help us. He was chalk as suspected, and finished right in the middle of the pack T-5 at -3.
Possibly the best suggestion of the whole article however, once again came in the “GPP Flyers” section at the end of the piece, as Billy Horschel had another fantastic week. I ended up rolling him out in cash at the last second, and man was that the right choice. Horschel was of course overshadowed by the dominance of Tiger Woods, but he did end up alone in second place at -9.
PGA DFS Golf Top Tier Targets: ($10,000 – $12,000)
Patrick Cantlay – $11,900 – (Cash/GPP)
As mentioned earlier, Cantlay is in a great spot to make some noise here this weekend, and compete for a win. I am not a big statistic guy, but I do look at them to find players who are well rounded for cash games. Cantlay is statiscally ahead of the curve in just about all aspects of his game, and he will get the benefit of playing in his home state of California this weekend.
Also of note, Cantlay has not missed a cut since May, and has posted three top-10’s in that span. With the weaker field, a player of this caliber is a lock for cash lineups at the very least this week. If I had to pick someone to win this weekend this is my guy.
Brendan Steele – $10,000 – (Cash)
I thought Steele would be priced up around $11,000 at least, but I guess recent play matters more to fanduel’s pricing algorithim? Steele has been pretty much abysmal the second half of the season, but I think a return to Silverado Country Club is exactly what he will need to get excited to golf again.
Looking for the three-peat, Steele has won this event for the last two years. Just that horse for the course type stat is the type of thing that will land a guy as chalk in cash games at this price. He missed four straight cuts in August, and finished 60th at the BMW Championship. He isn’t playing well, so there is risk, but he plays well here at Silverado Country Club… really well. I say lock him in your cash lineups. If you don’t feel safe, the best pivot in my opinion will be to Emiliano Grillo at $11,000.
***Also Consider: Joaquin Niemann $11,100 (GPP) – Emiliano Grillo $11,000 (Cash)***
PGA DFS Golf: Mid Tier Targets: ($9,000 – $10,000)
Chez Reavie – $9,500 – (Cash)
Reavie in cash? He is actually one of the most consistent golfers in this field. I know I was kind of surprised too. Anyways, Much like Steele, but not to the degree of success, Reavie has been good here in Napa at Silverado. In 2016, he made a decent run and finished in the top 25 at -10, and last year he was -8 and T-13. The attention will be on the large amounts of rookies making their debuts this weekend, and these are the type of tournaments guys like Reavie come out of nowhere and win.
After a rough June-July stretch where Reavie could not make a cut, he started August with a T-12 at the PGA Championship, and followed that with a T-20 at the Northern Trust. He faultered again at the Dell Technologies Championship missing another cut, but returned to action for the BMW Championship and finished a respectable T-38 at -7.
Abraham Ancer – $9,300 – (GPP)
Missing just two cuts in his last eight events, Ancer had a fairly respectable finish to the 2018 regular season. The 27-year-old posted a top-10 in each month of June, July and August, and having not made the FedEx Cup playoff, he just one shot to keep that streak alive in September. He made the cut at the BMW Championship, but never had the big round, finishing in a T-51. Ancer played in this event last year, finishing T-37 at -4. A top-10 at this price point would be perfect, so I am hoping he can find another here.
***Also Consider: Luke List $9,600 (GPP) – Harold Varner $9,400 (Cash)***
PGA DFS Golf Low Tier Targets: ($8,000 – $9,000)
Ollie Schniederjans – $8,800 – (GPP)
We are going to have a bunch of rookies playing their first event this week. Like I said with Reavie, it is the tournies like these where your above-average, close to top tier players come out victorious. With the attention off of guys like this where it maybe should be on them, they can tend to play their best game, with a little chip on their shoulders. Ollie has missed the cut in his last two events, and you have to go back to the Barracuda Championship in early August to find a spot where he had success.
Remember, the Barracuda was the same weekend as the Bridgestone Invitational, and Schniederjans found a solo fifth place finish there with the big names not in the field. He has played here at Silverado in the previous two Safeway Opens, missing the cut in 2016, and finishing at -7 at T-17 in last years event. I think nobody will be on him, and he is certainly a good enough golfer to make a run this weekend.
Andrew Landry – $8,100 – (Cash/GPP)
I only put cash here because I am rolling with it much like I did with Horschel last weekend. Is it safe for cash? Probably not. Unless I end up in a 100 man 50/50 with someone who reads this and trusts me, he will likely be 1% in those contests. This is however, one of my favorite GPP plays here for sure.
This isn’t one of the young guns on tour, as the 31-year-old has been a pro golfer since 2009. You just may not hear about him very often, because he has only won one professional PGA event in his career. That victory was this years Valero Open in April, where he held off Trey Mullinax and Sean O’Hair by two strokes. I like that fact that he has tasted victory at this level, and also the fact that he was a cut making machine at the end of the PGA season, making every cut in August in September, spanning five tournaments.
***Bonus GPP Flyers – Martin Laird $8,800, Brandon Harkins $7,900***
