2019 NFL Mock Draft: Broncos land Justin Herbert
By Brad Weiss
Last season, the San Francisco 49ers made the biggest splash at the trade deadline, as they plucked Jimmy Garoppolo away from the New England Patriots. After planting Garoppolo into the starting lineup in 2017, the 49ers really took off, winning their last five games, and setting the stage for what would hopefully be a very successful 2018 campaign.
In the offseason, the team signed Jimmy G to a monster contract extension, and brought in some talent around him. Unfortunately, Garoppolo was bitten by the injury bug already this season, as he tore up his knee two weeks ago, and is going to miss the remainder of the regular season.
The issue with that is the team will have to rely on CJ Beathard, who did not play well when he was the starting quarterback last season. Beathard will likely be a career backup, and while he did show some good signs against the Los Angeles Chargers last weekend, he is not going to win them many games, and the 49ers should be picking in the top-5 of the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
With that pick, they should also look to bolster their offensive line, bringing in a guy like Greg Little to add depth to their offensive tackle position. They spent a first rounder on Mike McGlinchey last season, and he will eventually be the team’s starting left tackle, because Joe Staley is 34-years old, and his time as an elite player in this league could be coming to an end.
