When you look around the landscape of college football for Week 6 of the 2018 season, you might think that the big-time matchups are somewhat scarce outside of a few games. However, there are sneaky good games that will be played throughout the day, including three top-25 matchups and one of the best rivalry games in the sport, the Red River Rivalry.
Having said that, only three top-25 matchups means that there are other games throughout the country that feature ranked teams putting themselves in danger of an upset. After all, this is the time of year when teams have been taking their lumps and are getting into the thick of conference play. As such, you start to see some good teams become vulnerable to getting upset.
Thatās even more so the case when you talk about some of these teams going on the road. However, weāre not trying to think about upsets entirely right now. Notre Dame (-6) at Virginia Tech
Saturday nightās primetime marquee matchup features the undefeated Notre Dame Fighting Irish, currently ranked sixth in the nation, going on the road to Blacksburg to face the Virginia Tech Hokies. This is a Hokies team who suffered a horrendous upset loss to Old Dominion two weeks ago, a game in which they lost starting quarterback Josh Jackson in the process. However, they bounced back to upset a previously unbeaten Duke team in emphatic fashion on the road last week.
With the play of junior quarterback Ryan Willis last week (332 yards, three touchdowns) against a solid Blue Devils secondary, there is optimism that Virginia Tech is going to be able to salvage their season. And, if they want to make their mark, doing something big against this Notre Dame team would be the perfect way to go about it.
Having said that, there have been few teams that are as impressive as Notre Dame has been over their past two games. That time frame is significant, because the last two outings have featured Ian Book as the starting quarterback for the Fighting Irish, and itās made all the difference in the world. They dropped 56 points on Wake Forest and then dominated Stanford last week, winning 38-17.
Put simply, the Fighting Irish arenāt getting enough love for how good and dangerous they are on both sides of the ball now that Book is at the helm. Six points is just way too low for this matchup as the Hokies, though fine with Willis, arenāt on the level of Notre Dame. Even on the road, take the Irish as favorites.
