Fantasy football 2018: top 10 waiver wire Week 5 pickups

Early in the regular season, there’s plenty of value to be found in fantasy football on the waiver wire. After four games, there’s now a better understanding of which players might be breakout stars in 2018.

There are several undervalued quarterbacks in fantasy football, based on ownership percentage rates in Yahoo! and NFL.com fantasy leagues. The likes of Blake Bortles and Derek Carr are coming off of monster weeks, yet these young quarterbacks remain free agents in the majority of standard leagues. Expect to see a few names at the position here.

QB: Blake Bortles, Jacksonville Jaguars

Blake Bortles may be difficult to trust in real life, because he had two awful performances this season in Week 1 and Week 3, hovering around 5.0 yards per pass attempt with one touchdown in both games combined.

But in Weeks 2 and 4, Bortles was a machine, throwing for over 375 yards in each of those outings. In Week 2, Bortles sliced through the New England Patriots defense, embarrassing defensive backs like Eric Rowe en route to a surprising Jacksonville victory against a human Tom Brady.

After a letdown game agains the rival Tennessee Titans, in which the Jags lost 9-6, Bortles turned in one of the best statistical performances of his career. The Jaguars quarterback completed over three-quarters of his passes, averaging more than 10.0 yards per pass attempt with 388 total yards and two scores.

Bortles gets the Kansas City Chiefs next, and that figures to be a high-scoring game with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense on the other side of the field. Those are the games where Bortles can produce more big numbers, and he is a great QB2 option to have with the Jaguars offense poised to fly statistically. Plus, without Leonard Fournette, Bortles will be tasked with throwing the football more frequently.
