NHL DFS DraftKings Snipes – Friday October 5th
NHL DFS DraftKings Snipes – Friday October 5th
Happy Friday everyone! Hopefully you will be playing NHL DFS on DraftKings, because we at FantasyCPR will have you covered with some snipes for the evening. Last night was a wild 10-game slate. W are still looking for answers on contenders and pretenders. The Caps had an up and down back-to-back after shutting out Boston one night, then losing 6-7 to the Penguins in overtime the next. The Islanders and Hawks were winners in overtime. The 2018 Stanley Cup runner-up Golden Knights came out sluggish in a 5-2 loss at home.
Each post we will have a quick recap of players discussed in the previous post. Since it’s the first time with the recap, below will cover opening night as well as last night. Success is the clear goal, but it is important to understand our misses as well. See if we can find those trends that work, and areas we can improve.
October 3
- Auston Matthews – 2 goals. A bit of advice. Start Matthews every opening night for the rest of his career.
- Sean Monahan – 1 goal. Solid game in a surprising loss to Vancouver.
- Mitch Marner – Was not much a factor in the fun in Toronto.
- Johnny Gaudreau – 1 assist.
- Danton Heinen – No he didn’t play well, but zeros across the board for Heinen looks better than teammates +/- numbers.
- Morgan Rielly – 1 assist.
- Joakim Ryan – Dart throw at Ryan didn’t pay off last night. Plus Karlsson and Burns ended up spending a lot of time on the ice together.
- Frederik Andersen -34 saves and the W in overtime.
- Mike Smith – Not a good night for Mr. Smith. Maybe Vancouver isn’t who we thought they were.
- Tuukka Rask – Yikes!
October 4
- Jack Eichel – Rough start for Eichel. Thought process was Boston suffered a bad loss, then had to play the second half of a back-to-back.
- Nick Schmaltz – Quiet night for Schmaltzy. Coach Q was altering lines throughout the night
- Andreas Athanasiou – Also quiet as he had just under 15 minutes of ice time.
- Patrick Kane – 1 goal and 1 assist. GWG in overtime. Quenneville made it glaringly obvious Kane will be on the ice for every power play.
- Brandon Saad – Saad also under performed with the unpredictable line tinkering.
- Andrei Svechnikov – Took a few shots, had a hit and nearly 12 minutes of time on ice. He’s feeling his way out before earning more serious ice time.
- John Klingberg – 1 goal and 27 minutes of ice.
- Esa Lindell – 1 assist. Was a part of his line mates goal
- Dougie Hamilton – 1 assist, 5 shots on goal and 2 hits.
- Marc-Andre Fleury – Yikes!! That earned double exclamations.
- Cam Ward – Played just well enough to earn the W in overtime.
Don’t worry, not every recap will be that long. To make up for it, we will keep the preview of Friday games brief!
Tonight offers a very small slate. Columbus (-150) will be hometown favorite against Carolina, and San Jose (-105) heads south to LA. Hockey offers a fast-paced style of play and on-the-fly line changes making it more difficult to predict outcomes. However, with the use of advanced statistics, you can find an edge in each slate. The goal (pun intended) is to leverage match ups to help you win. That is where we at FantasyCPR step in. We want to help ease the selection process to give you that edge.
Stacking is the way to go with two games to choose from. You want to have a bit of a contrarian approach. Who do you think will be chalk, then pivot to someone unsuspecting who has a favorable match-up. Now let’s take a look at Friday’s match-ups and see if we can fill your pockets! As always, find me on twitter @rickyolshansky or on FantasyCPR for all of the hockey content you need.
NHL DFS DraftKings Snipes – Centers and Wingers
Centers
Anze Kopitar Los Angeles Kings ($6,800)
The obvious chalk here at center. Kopitar, the new captain, had a stellar season last year with a career high 35 goals and 92 points. Not sure if he will continue converting goals at the same rate he did a season ago, but look for him to build on that performance. The Selke Trophy winner has always had stellar possession numbers. His CF% was 53.1 and FF% similar at 52.9 in 2017/18. Goalie situation for the Sharks tonight is still uncertain, but Martin Jones looked vulnerable after surrendering five goals to Anaheim.
Wingers
Artemi Panarin Columbus Blue Jackets ($7,000)
The Bread Man has proven to be a point machine since joining the league. He has smooth hands and a wicked shot. After spending his first two seasons in the NHL on a line with Patrick Kane, you wondered if he would still have the magic once he moved. On this minuscule slate, don’t cheap out and get the cup of soup. Go for it and order a bread bowl. Panarin’s points increased on his move to Columbus. He helped turn this team into a playoff contender. He added a point and an assist on the road in Detroit. Let’s see if he can continue with more points in a match up against a Hurricanes team that ranks 21st versus the position. Consider pairing him with line mates Pierre-Luc Dubois or Cam Atkinson if you agree on the idea of a Columbus onslaught.
Ilya Kovalchuk Los Angeles Kings ($5,700)
Kovalchuk is back! He was a premier goal scorer with 417 goals in 816 games. He left the NHL to continue his career in Russia over the last six years. According to Greg Whyshynski of ESPN, “LA coach John Stevens stated that he is definitely still deadly on the power play.” I like his chances to score with his shooting ability, matched with a puck possession heavy team.
NHL DFS DraftKings Snipes – Defense and Goalies
Defense
Zach Werenski Columbus Blue Jackets ($6,100)
If you have faith in the offense of San Jose or LA, then Werenski is worth the money. Odds are, people will still pay up for Karlsson, Burns, and Doughty. Werenski may still be different enough to help you in a tournament. With 28 minutes of ice time and seven shots on goal, you have to like his chances at more scoring opportunities.

David Savard Columbus Blue Jackets ($3,900)
On the contrary, if you don’t want to spend big on your defense, Savard is a good alternative. Use that extra money on your goalie or on a forward with the potential for a huge night. He covers the side opposite of Werenski of the ice. Columbus takes on Carolina on the second night of a back-to-back and could catch them flat-footed. It makes sense to stack this team tonight. Playing Savard over Werenski gives you a better opportunity to roster their top offensive line.
Goalies
Sergei Bobrovsky Columbus Blue Jackets ($8,400)
DraftKings agrees that Columbus is the clear favorite tonight at home. Bobrovsky is the most expensive goalie followed by his backup Joonas Korpisalo. Makes little sense, but let’s move on shall we?
Jonathan Quick Los Angeles Kings ($7,900)
If you expect the Columbus goalie to be complete chalk, you’ll want to differentiate tonight. You can feel comfortable with the world-class Jonathan Quick in net. He is capable of shutting down any team on any night. The extra $500 could be used to upgrade another position if you decide to go that route.
