NHL DFS Man Advantage 10-5
By Matt Vecchio
Welcome to NHL DFS Man Advantage for tonight’s 2 game slate. With only two games on the schedule I will just give you a breakdown of both games instead of my usual best plays style format. I have a poll up on my Twitter asking if you’d prefer I continue to do a breakdown of all games in the future or keep the best plays style. The poll is running through Friday night until around 6pm eastern.
We have a very small 2 game slate tonight featuring the Blue Jackets home opener against the Carolina Hurricanes with both teams on the second night of a back to back. In the late contest it is another California rivalry night when San Jose travels to L.A. to take on the Kings.
CAROLINA HURRICANES @ COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
Goalies – We know that Bobrovsky will be in net for the Jackets and I am guessing since it is the second of a back to back that the Hurricanes will start Curtis McElhinney, but noting is confirmed yet. I am not interested in starting whoever the Canes put in net against the Columbus. I much prefer Bob in this game, and as the best of the 4 in net tonight based on match up. Bobrovsky is the most expensive goalie on DraftKings for the night ($8.4K), and I am pretty sure he is the goalie I will be rolling out on Friday.
Defense – Starting with the Blue Jackets D there isn’t much I like fantasy wise beyond Zach Werenski. He quarterbacks the first pp unit for Columbus and is the biggest offensive threat on the blue line for the Jackets. If you are looking for some value on defense, and we all are, you can take a chance with Markus Nutivaara. Nutivaara sees time on the second pp unit and does have some fantasy value especially at his $3.5k price on DraftKings. Last season he recorded 7 goals and 23 total points in 61 games in his second season in the league
For Carolina there are a few more choices on the on defense than from Columbus. You can use any of the top 4 from the Hurricanes blue line and they will produce for you. Dougie Hamilton is the top d man for Carolina and plays with the first pp unit, while his partner Jaccob Slavin doesn’t see pp minutes but actually played over 2 minutes more than Hamilton against the Islanders Thursday night. I much prefer to use Hamilton ($5.2K), but he is $1.6k more then Slavin. The Canes second combo might have more combined fantasy value then the first pair with Calvin de Haan and Justin Faulk. As with the top pair only one, Faulk, sees pp time. Faulk at $4.9k is probably my pick if I am only using one of the 4 from Carolina. Last season Faulk scored 19 of his 31 points on the power play.
Forwards – Columbus’ top line of Panarin-Dubois-Atkinson is the overall top line for this game. All three play on the first pp unit along with Werenski. Dubois and the man with the best nickname in hockey, The Bread Man, Artemi Panarin are the way I would go if I was picking only 2 from this line to use. Atkinson did score Thursday night for Columbus. If you are looking to still get some Blue Jackets in but need to save some cash you can go down to the second line of Foligno-Wennberg-Bjorkstrand, and like the first line all three play on the pp. There isn’t a lot of value with the Jackets forwards as they will all cost you $4.7K or more. John Anderson is also in play at $4.9K on DraftKings as well. Anderson also scored in the opener against Detroit on Thursday.
Carolina will provide a little more value up front than Columbus did. Their top line of Zykov-Aho-Svechnikov all play pp minutes but only Zykov and Aho play together on the first unit, and Svechnikov plays on the second. If you are looking to spread out your players on the Canes you can use Necas or Ferland to play with Svechnikov on the second pp unit. For the first power play unit you can use Jordan Staal or Teuvo Teravainen. I like the idea of splitting forwards when it gives you players on the top two lines and same power play unit as well.

SAN JOSE SHARKS @ LOS ANGELES KINGS
Goalies – It is expected that both number one netminders will play in this game since it is L.A.’s first and the Sharks had a day off in between games. If I was going to use one of these two I would probably lean towards Martin Jones ($7.7K) of the Sharks because I believe he has the better team in front of him. This is not a knock in any way on Jonathan Quick($7.9K), it is just a preference based on the rosters. I think both teams will have outstanding seasons as will these two goalies and we will be using them both regularly throughout the season.

Defense – This game is loaded on defensemen who are fantasy studs. For the Sharks the two obvious choices are Karlsson and Burns. I don’t really need to go into detail about these two, they both put up great numbers almost every night as they both averaged over 4 FPPG last season. Marc-Edouard Vlasic is the only other defender from the Sharks who sees pp minutes and he also plays first d pair with Karlsson. If you are looking for value you can take Joakim Ryan ($3K), he doesn’t play on the power play but he is Burns d partner.
For Los Angeles the obvious pick is Drew Doughty, but like Karlsson and Burns you are going to pay a premium for him. Both Jake Muzzin and Alec Martinez play pp minutes and will cost you significantly less than Doughty.
Forwards-
San Jose surprised a few of us by putting Evander Kane on the 3rd line instead of playing him with the top line. He did score on Wednesday, but isn’t seeing any pp minutes currently, so he is a risky play. I prefer to play the top line of Meier-Thornton-Pavelski, and if you’re looking for a one-off play Tomas Hertl is my favorite for that.
When it comes to Los Angeles there isn’t as much depth there. Of course you can use Anze Kopitar and Ilya Kovalchuk together from the top line. But if you’re going with a line stack I actually prefer line two. You will get some salary relief and also this line gets you access to both pp units. Jeff Carter plays on the first unit with Kopitar and Kovalchuk. Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli play together on the second unit.
For a small slate there are a lot of options to use for your roster build. At first look I am like a build that let’s me us Bobrovsky in net with a value defenseman paired with one of the high tier guys. I want to get some Blue Jackets in up front and then work with some of the value forwards from the Sharks and Kings game. I hope you like this style of article and let me know on Twitter what you think.
