DraftKings MLB Picks October 6: Cole is the only safe pitcher

We are back down to two games today. Only the A.L. Series are here at our disposal on DraftKings, but at least we know which four starting pitchers we have to choose from. This is the playoffs, so all of the pitchers are good, at least in theory. Let’s look a little closer.

It’s going to be warm and humid in Houston, which is good hitting weather if the roof is open. There is a slight rain chance in Houston, but probably not enough to force the roof closed.

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on!

ST PETERSBURG, FL – SEPTEMBER 12: Carlos Carrasco #59 of the Cleveland Indians pitches during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on September 12, 2018 in St Petersburg, Florida. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Gerrit Cole ($9,600): The Indians are only hitting .235 against Cole in 51 at bats with a homer, four runs, and 13 strikeouts. On this slate, that qualifies as an ace. This is the playoffs. All of the pitchers are good or better and many of the hitters have had some success against them. That’s what makes these slates so fun. I’m inclined to pay up for Cole here because I think he has the best shot at a win with the way his offense is going.

Middle Tier:

Carlos Carrasco ($7,900): There are plenty of things to keep me off of Carrasco tonight. First off, Houston hit four homers yesterday in Game 1 with Kluber on the mound. Second, Carrasco’s ERA is a run worse at home. Third, Houston is hitting .291 with five homers and 15 runs in 134 at bats off of Carrasco. Should I go on? Yeah? How about Carrasco allowing eight runs in two starts against Houston this year. I like the strikeout upside here, but I kind of think Houston is going to touch him up a bit. I’d rather drop to a cheaper option.

Bargain Pitchers:

David Price ($6,800): The current Yankees are hitting a robust .308 with 14 homers and 41 runs against Price with just 43 strikeouts in 221 at bats. In four starts against the Yankees this year, Price is 0-3 with a 10.34 ERA and just 11 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. Can it get any worse? Actually, yes. Price is 0-8 in nine career post season starts. Will the baseball Gods shine on you? Does Jesus really hate the Yankees? If Price wins, maybe, but do you want to bet on that?

Masahiro Tanaka ($5,300): Tanaka has shown an ability to turn it on come playoff time, but his career numbers against Boston are so bad that I wouldn’t bank on it here. The Red Sox are hitting .267 with 14 homers and 40 runs in 303 at bats. It hasn’t been any better this year. The Red Sox have torched Tanaka for 16 runs in just 19 innings over four games this year.

BOSTON, MA – OCTOBER 05: J.D. Martinez #28 of the Boston Red Sox hits a three run home run in the first inning against the New York Yankees during Game One of the American League Division Series at Fenway Park on October 5, 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Jose Ramirez is the Cleveland bat to own again. He is the only current Indian to homer against Cole, and has two RBI.

I wasn’t much on Boston last night, but I could have been. They chased Happ in the third inning. The same is probably going to happen tonight. J.D. Martinez is 8-18 with three homers and eight RBI against Tanaka, and he homered last night. Benintendi and Mookie have both homered twice. If you are paying for hitting, it starts with Boston bats.

Luke Voit is really expensive tonight, but he does have two homers in just five at bats against David Price. Aaron Hicks has smacked to homers as well, and is worth a look if he is in the lineup. Didi Gregorius has a homer and five RBI off of Price as well.

Middle Tier:

George Springer has homered in five straight post-season games. Are you really going to fade that? Jose Altuve is worth a look here as well since he is 10-23(.435) with a homer and three RBI against Carrasco.

You almost have to play Gary Sanchez tonight. Sanchez is 6-13 with five homers and 11 RBI against Price already. And you thought the Yankees owned Pedro…..

Steve Pearce has homered twice off of Tanaka. Both Xander Bogaerts and Brock Holt have homered once.

Bargain Shoppers:

Once again, Marwin Gonzalez is my favorite punt option. He is 3-12 with a homer and two RBI off of Carrasco. That’s good enough for me in this price range. Josh Reddick has four career RBI off of Carrasco and is 6-12 if you don’t mind slumming a little more.

If Alonso is too cheap for you, Mitch Moreland has homered twice off of Tanaka in his career. Ian Kinsler has taken him deep as well.

Yonder Alonso is 3-8 with three RBI in his career against Gerrit Cole. That makes him a sneaky value play if you think Cole is going to give up a couple of runs.
