Strange as it might seem in light of their best ever start to a season, but Liverpool have only played well for a full 90 minutes once so far, namely in the away win over Spurs. They also played badly for the first time this season in midweek, even if Napoli’s winner didn’t come until the final minutes, and their fabled front three of Salah, Mane and Firmino have failed to score in the club’s past three games in all competitions. This is the end of a tough run of matches for Liverpool – two meetings with Chelsea and that Champions League away tie in Italy – and while it’s far too early to be talking about title deciders, a loss here could destroy Liverpool’s momentum.
Manchester City’s domestic form has been imperious for the most part. Only one of their league games has been a real contest – the away match at Wolves – and City only failed to win there due to a refereeing error. So while both clubs go into this game level on points, with City topping the table courtesy of their superior goal difference, it’s hard not to see Pep Guardiola’s side as the form team. Nonetheless, Liverpool can take some comfort from the fact that City have only played a big-six club once so far, and that was against an Arsenal team that was clearly struggling to implement Unai Emery’s new ideas. City’s stuttering Champions League form is also cause for cautious optimism from the hosts.
