I’m willing to bet that when John Wells wrote last weeks episode of Shameless he knew it would be topical. I’m not sure he expected it to be quite this relevant. Especially with everything that has happened in the last week.
Both Mo and Frank lived up to expectations for them, as long as those expectations were negative. What remains to be seen is how Mo’s victory will change (or not) both him and his relationship with Frank.
Fiona probably won’t be happy, but there’s only so much she can say. Especially after she changed her allegiances in the 11th hour.
This week, Frank’s health may force him to take drastic measures. His liver medication means he can’t take any other drugs. And in the episode’s trailer, it doesn’t seem like he’s ok with that.
Whereas episode 4 featured a broad spectrum of the show’s characters, episode 5 appears to be more focused. At least if the trailer and synopsis are anything to go by. Both of them focus pretty narrowly on Frank, Fiona, and Ian. Will Fiona be the ‘Black-Haired Ginger’ in this scenario? And will the superstition about gingers not having souls come out? Because Frank kind of does seems like the type of person to believe that.
And Ian could be the one facing the short end of the stick. His ‘Gay Jesus’ mission began to backfire on him in episode 4. Now facing a trial and possible jail time he and all his followers have to hope for the best. If he comes out the other side he could be stronger than ever, but he (and the whole movement) may not survive.
