Fantasy Football 2018: 5 Players It’s Okay to Cut
By Bill Pivetz
With plenty of players to add off the waiver wire, here are five Fantasy football players you should drop from your team.
There are tons of fantasy football posts on the Internet telling you which players to pick up off the waiver wire to help your team. Yet, there are little to no posts talking about the players you should cut ties with. In order to make room for the new flavor of the week, someone has to be dropped.
The players I list will have an ownership percentage of 60 percent or higher on their respective fantasy sites. This isn’t to say these players shouldn’t be owned later in the season. But they just aren’t producing enough to for fantasy purposes.
If you play in shallow leagues, eight or 10 teams, there are plenty of players available on the waiver wire so dropping your sixth-round pick won’t be the end of the world. Those in leagues 12 teams or deeper have a harder time cutting those early-draft picks so the new player has to be worth it.
I will be talking about running backs and wide receivers. The tight end position is too shallow to be cutting a player after one or two bad weeks. The level of talent on the waiver wire is bottom of the barrel, desperation level.
Jay Ajayi, PHI
Many thought that joining the Philadelphia Eagles would revitalize Ajayi’s career. He’s shown some flashes but hasn’t been on the field consistently. Unfortunately, he won’t play for the Eagles again this season.
It was reported that he tore his ACL and will be out for the rest of the year. Unless you play in a dynasty league, Ajayi is no longer rosterable and even in those leagues, he may be cuttable.
The Eagles will turn to Wendell Smallwood and Corey Clement in the backfield with Darren Sproles injured as well.

Chris Hogan, NE
Hogan was thought to see a huge boost in production with Julian Edelman suspended for the first four games. That did not happen. In those games, he caught eight passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
Hogan caught three passes for 34 yards in Week 5. The Patriots have Edelman back, acquired Josh Gordon and have seen improvements from Phillip Dorsett. Hogan is the fourth or fifth option in the passing game.
He may see a big game or two the rest of the season but no one knows when those games will come.
Derrick Henry, TEN
With Demarco Murray out of the picture, many thought Henry was going to step up as the bell cow for the Tennessee Titans. That didn’t last long as the team acquired Dion Lewis.
Lewis is a threat in the passing game, 85 receptions in New England and 21 this season, but has crept into the rushing game, too. Lewis has 55 rushing attempts to Henry’s 65. Lewis has 177 rushing yards while Henry has just 219.
Henry has yet to score a touchdown and the Titans offense is one of the worst in the league. Until he breaks off a 100-yard or two-touchdown game, he can’t be started and should be cut in some leagues.
Kenny Stills, MIA
The Miami Dolphins offense ranks 28th in points per game, 30th in yards per game and 30th in first downs per game. Ryan Tannehill was the 21st-ranked quarterback in fantasy entering Week 5 and his performance this week probably dropped him a few more spots.
Stills had a great Week 1 with four catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Since then, he has a total of 10 catches for 135 yards and one touchdown.
The Dolphins have some tough matchups coming up, starting with the Chicago Bears in Week 6. I’d look to find another wide receiver on the waiver wire quickly before it’s too late.
Giovani Bernard, CIN
Bernard’s inclusion is also due to injury. The Cincinnati Bengals like to use both Bernard and Joe Mixon but with Bernard scheduled to be out up to four weeks, Mixon will get most of the snap share.
Bernard may still be a factor when he returns but his inconsistent usage may cause problems for fantasy owners. It may be hard for fantasy owners to cut him because of more teams using committees and no clear No. 1 running backs.
Fantasy owners spent some high draft picks on these five players. They were hoping for great seasons from them and help them win a championship. After five disappointing weeks, it’s time to face facts that these players are not who we thought they were (in Dennis Green’s voice). Hopefully, you can find a valuable replacement on your waiver wire.
