3. C.J. Beathard, QB – San Francisco 49ers

Now, trust me on this: you don’t want to invest a whole heck of a lot in C.J. Beathard, the backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. He’s not going to be working his way into the NFL MVP conversation or anything like that.

But here’s the deal with Beathard. The former quarterback for the Iowa Hawkeyes wasn’t supposed to be playing at all in 2018. This season in San Francisco was supposed to be all about their newfound savior Jimmy Garoppolo, who led the Niners to five consecutive wins to end last season after they traded for him in the middle of the year.

But just three weeks into this season, Garoppolo’s first year as a starter in the NFL was abruptly ended when he tore his ACL, and his backup Beathard was forced into action.

Now you can guarantee that Beathard won’t be leading the 49ers to the playoffs, but if your starting quarterback is on a bye in Week 6 and you need someone to fill in, he hasn’t been bad from a fantasy standpoint in the last two games that he’s started.

Against the Los Angeles Chargers, Beathard threw for 298 yards and two touchdowns for 17.8 ESPN fantasy points. In Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals, Beathard threw for 349 yards and two touchdowns for 20.7 fantasy points.

Don’t pick up Beathard with the intention of having him start the rest of the year for you. But if you need a substitute quarterback, he might do just enough to get you through the week.
