ESPN College Pick Em Picks Week 7 2018: Ride the UCF offense

This was the worst ESPN College Pick Em week I have ever seen, and not just from me. I hit my ten pointer, but only mustered seven other points out of the nine remaining games. This week was so bad that only three of us topped 30 points, and one was an entry that has only picked upsets. 33 points was the best in the Fantasy CPR reader’s group this week.

If you would like to get in on the fun, join this group and compete head to head with the writers at Fantasy CPR and with fans like yourself! It’s not too late to join!

More from College Football Odds

This comes a week after Ernie didn’t miss a pick last week. This week, inrareform and Jay_da_gr8_1 tied for the lead with 33 points. That caused a huge shakeup in the top ten, which was so close coming into this week.

Jay_da_gr8_1 took over the lead with his great week compared to the rest of us. He now has 242 points on the season, and opened up a sizable 13 point lead over Brian Prete. BKNoleGirl and Protege21242 are tied for third, three points behind Brian. Ernie hangs in the top five one point back of third. mnsooners is one point behind Ernie. Irish Dawgs & Ducks and Brandon8736 are one point behind that. mdaallen is one point behind that in ninth. I round out the top ten one point back of that, meaning I dropped from fourth to tenth with that terrible week. There is now 21 points between first and tenth. Last week there was only nine points separating.

Again, there were no clean sweeps, but 25 out of 26 of us took Michigan. 20 of us had that as our ten pointer, and two more had it at nine. The same 25 took the Irish over Virginia Tech as well. Only Yellow Wolverine and mdaallen’s upset entry picked SDSU over Boise.

These picks will be for the confidence version of the game, where you assign a point value from 1-10 based on how confident you are in each pick. I will publish mine here each week. If I make a change, I will just amend the original article.

Can the group collectively rebound from an awful week 6?

(1) LSU over Georgia:

LSU has been strong at home. The Georgia offense has been methodical, but that’s about it. They may just be so boring that everyone is sleeping on them. I’m hoping that people just look at the rankings and pick Georgia. I haven’t seen enough from the Georgia offense, or defense for that matter, that says they will definitively win this game. I may as well take the shot at a couple of extra points by going against the grain in what I view as a toss up.

(2) Colorado over USC:

Chenault is going to run wild in the USC secondary, but I am nervous about this one. First off, it’s in L.A., and the Ralphies haven’t been great on the road. On top of that, Colorado always seems to have trouble with USC. In fact, the Ralphies have never beaten the Trojans. Not once in 81 years. Of course, it’s only 12 meetings, but that’s still dominance. I think that changes this year.

(3) West Virginia at Iowa State:

The Iowa State secondary was pretty good last week. Pretty good may not cut it against West Virginia. However, this game is in Ames, and it looks like Iowa State has a quarterback that can help them keep up with the Mountaineers. Don’t be shocked if Iowa State pulls another upset. I wont be. That fact that I have four on this should tell you something about how tough this week may be.

(4) Middle Tennessee State over Florida International:

Near as I can tell, FIU is favored just because they are at home. Vegas only has the spread at 2. I like the Blue Raiders straight up, and it’s all because of the veteran QB Brent Stockstill. Now, the MTSU defense has been a mess, but FIU hasn’t been a lot better. Still, there’s a reason I have this pretty low.

(5) Ohio over Northern Illinois:

This one is even in most spots in Vegas, but you wouldn’t know that by ESPN users. NIU is an overwhelming favorite there right now, and they shouldn’t be. Ohio’s body of work is much better and they actually have a quarterback. A real one that can throw a pass and everything!

(6) Washington over Oregon:

Oregon owned Washington for most of the 2000’s, but the Huskies have won the last two, and they haven’t been close. Still, that vaunted Washington offense didn’t look very good against a poor UCLA defense. The good news is that Oregon’s may be worse.

(7) Miami(FL) over Virginia:

The spread is less than a touchdown, so Vegas isn’t really a believer in this Miami offense. The Hoos haven’t beaten Miami since 2014. I doubt that reverses now, mostly because I don’t think Virginia has the offense to pull the upset. It may be too close for comfort for Miami fans since UVA has a solid defense.

(8) Michigan over Wisconsin:

There is a big gap between these two teams, and it’s all in the defense. Michigan’s defense almost looks NFL ready. Wisconsin got shredded by a freshman quarterback on an 0-4 team last week. Michigan’s D is good enough to hold Taylor in check, and Hornibrook, while better, still isn’t a guy you want to have to rely on to win you the game. This is a low scoring defensive battle, and Michigan’s defense is clearly better.

(9) Penn State over Michigan State:

This is going to be another Big Ten(14) defensive slugfest, but Penn State’s offense so much better that they can’t help but win. We saw McSorely give a pretty solid Ohio State unit fits. Michigan State’s offense has been a mess without LJ Scott. Even if he is back, he probably wont be 100%. I doubt the Spartans overcome that.

(10) Central Florida over Memphis:

This is more about the Memphis defense than the UCF offense. McKenzie Milton is one of the best athletes in the country, but he has thrown a lot of ill-advised passes this year. That may bite him at some point, but not here. This is another 5 TD game for Milton, and another blowout loss for Memphis.
