NHL DFS Man Advantage 10/9
By Matt Vecchio
Welcome to NHL DFS Man Advantage for Tuesday 10/9. We have a nice size slate of 6 games for this Tuesday night.
Tonight there is 6 games on the NHL DFS slate, which for a Tuesday is relatively small. If you are new to NHL there are usually three heavy days each week, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. There are a few intriguing match-ups on this slate that could be high scoring which is where we want to focus. There are some situations where a back up goalie might be in net and those are games we’d want some exposure to. We have the Sharks on a back to back in Philly, and the Canucks travel cross continent to take on the Hurricanes in Raleigh. There is a possible offensive explosion brewing in Dallas with the Maple Leafs in town to take on the Stars. Toronto currently plays at the fastest pace in the NHL so we should be looking to get some Leafs in our lineups as well.
For this article I will breakdown the goaltending situation for the night, then give you a few game breakdowns and lastly the best lines to stack for the night. As always you can hit me up on Twitter with any questions or comments @MVecchio81 and make sure to check out all the rest of the great stuff we have to offer here on @FantasyCPR.
NHL DFS Goalies:
Tonight my favorite goalie is Connor Hellebuyck (WPG) at home against the Kings. Los Angeles comes into town with out their top goalie, Jonathan Quick, who is on the IR with a lower body injury. Winnipeg is the biggest money line favorite (-190) and I will be using Hellebuyck and his .922 save percentage. In just two games the Jets have allowed 77 shots on goal against Hellebuyck, of which he has stopped 71.
After Hellebuyck it gets a little dicey in net. There is no really great and obvious start, but Pekka Rinne is the a pretty good option two at home against Calgary. Rinne stopped 32 of 34 shots he faced against the Rangers in the Preds first game of the season. Another option is the expected starter for Carolina, Petr Mrazek. I’m really on Mrazek for GPP’s because of Vancouver’s lack of shots over their first two games, 43 shots in two games is very low. My reason for limiting my exposure of Mrazek to GPP’s is because of the low shot total, but also the high shooting % by Vancouver, which is the best in the league at over 20%.
My last goalie for the evening I am targeting is Philipp Grubauer making his first start for the Avalanche in Columbus. Early on Columbus has been one the most inefficient offenses in the league this season. They ranks 24th with only 4 goals scored and have a horrendous 5.6 shooting percentage.
NHL DFS Game Breakdowns:
Starting with the last game of the evening where I think there has the potential to be a ton of goals scored, Toronto @ Dallas. Only the Blackhawks have scored more goals then Maple Leafs (13) this season in their 3 games. On defense Morgan Rielly has been on fire to start the season with 2 goals and 4 assists, and 11 shots on goal. Auston Matthews leads the NHL with 5 goals and 8 points and linemate Patrick Marleau has 4 assists. Lastly you can use Nazim Kadri as a good one-off play or with Rielly and Matthews as a PP stack. Kadri has 2 assists in the first 3 games, 1 each at even strength and on the PP. Moving onto to Dallas, Connor Carrick has been a pleasant surprise for the Dallas playing on their 3rd D pair but he has been getting over 15 minutes a game in the Stars first two games. Carrick will only set you back $3.5K on DraftKings. In the first two games Carrick has 3 assists, 3 shots on goal and 2 blocks. As far as the forwards for Dallas, I will be focusing on them in the line stacks section.
San Jose travels from Brooklyn to Philadelphia for their second of a back to back to take on the Flyers. After getting shutout on Monday afternoon the Sharks are going to look bounce back against Philly. Evander Kane is possibly the best forward on the Sharks, he has started hot until the entire team cooled off on Monday. Kane has 2 goals in three games and has 24 shots in those games for an 8 shots per game average. San Jose has started slow and will need guys like Brent Burns , Erik Karlsson, and Joe Pavelski to get going soon. Philly comes home after starting the season in Vegas and then Colorado. They announced that JVR will be on the shelf for 5-6 weeks so they will look to guys like Wayne Simmonds to continue playing like he has ( 2 goals in 2 games). You can also do a mini stack with Simmonds center, Mikhail Vorobyev (1 goal and 1 assist). On the point there is a duo that rivals the Sharks duo, Shayne Gostisbehere and Ivan Provorov. Neither has recorded a point yet but they will come, Ghost has 6 shots in 2 games and 3 for Provorov
I mentioned Petr Mrazek earlier as a potential goalie to use on Tuesday, but there is risk there because both the teams do have some goal scoring potential. When it comes to Carolina they have been on fire to start the season. They have 12 goals in 3 games and their leading goal scorer Sebastian Aho is their best player right now. In 3 games Aho has 1 goal and 3 assists. Carolina has 4 different players with 2 goal each in their first three games, but of those 4 I am interested in using Warren Foegele for tonight. He is a young player on a line with two vets in Jordan Staal and Justin Williams. On defense the Canes best option is Justin Faulk. For the Canucks their stud rookie Elias Pettersson has been outstanding to start the year. In his first two career games Pettersson has 3 goals and 2 assists. In my lineups without Mrazek I am definitely going to have plenty of exposure to Pettersson. I may also try to use a mini stack of Pettersson with linemate Nikolay Goldobin ( 1 goal and 2 assists). Alex Edler is the only fantasy relevant option on the Canucks blue line.
NHL DFS Top Line Stacks
Gabriel Landeskog – Nathan MacKinnon – Mikko Rantanen (Col) – You will probably get sick of hearing about this line before Thanksgiving, but it is one of the best in the league and they are the Avalanches best chance to score every night. Colorado has 9 goals in 2 games, this line has 4 of them.

On the other side of the ice from Colorado, Columbus has themselves a pretty good top line as well. Artemi Panarin – Pierre-Luc Dubois – Cam Atkinson has only 4 goals and this line has half of them. If Columbus scores it will most likely come from this line
I mentioned on the previous page about Dallas only having one line I want to use, and Jamie Benn – Tyler Seguin – Alexander Radulov is that line. Dallas has scored 8 goals, and these three guys have 6 of them ( 2 each). Dallas’ offense lives and dies with this line.
Even though I am on Rinne for Nashville in net, I do think there is a line I wouldn’t mind targeting from Calgary. The Flames second line of Matthew Tkachuk – Mikael Backlund – Austin Czarnik has been playing very well to start the season . Tkachuk has 5 points in the teams first to games, Czarnik has a goal and an assist and while Backlund hasn’t score he has taken 10 shots
For Nashville I am intrigued by their second line of Craig Smith – Kyle Turris – Kevin Fiala. They haven’t scored a ton, they have 4 points combined but have taken 14 combined shots on goal so they are getting opportunities. This isn’t a line stack but P.K. Subban and Mattias Ekholm have both started the season on fire with each of them scoring a goal and 2 assists.
