Point Guard

Starter: George Hill

Depth: Collin Sexton, David Nwaba, Isaiah Taylor

This is the spot where a change in the starting lineup at some point this season seems most likely. Cleveland drafted Sexton eighth overall in June and he is the one young player with star potential on the roster. If it becomes clear the Cavaliers are not going to compete for a playoff spot, or that they don’t want to, Sexton will likely become the starter. Either way, he is likely to play a bunch of minutes this season and while there will surely be growing pains, as with any other rookie point guards, Sexton should also provide plenty of highlights on both ends of the floor.

What exactly Hill will provide remains to be seen. For most of last season, the veteran seemed to coast as a member of the Sacramento Kings before turning his aggressiveness up a bit after arriving in Cleveland. While he isn’t the defender that he once was, Hill still has the size and length to defend either guard position while providing floor spacing and some creation offensively.

Nwaba probably will see much of his early season minutes at the shooting guard position, but he should be able to fill some spot minutes at point guard if needed. Taylor spent last season with the Hawks as a backup point guard, but he probably isn’t good enough to be an important piece going forward. That said, as Cleveland searches for young pieces to take into a rebuild, it makes sense to see if he can continue to develop into a solid backup for the long-term.
