Mayans M.C. Episode 6: A familiar foe returns in “Gato/Mis”
Episode 6 of Mayans M.C. was a setup episode for the ages. Here’s a complete recap of the events and what they mean for the MC.
Mayans M.C.’s sixth episode opens with Angel, Coco and EZ bringing the rebels some money. Upon their arrival, Angel demands more out of his relationship with Adelita. She reveals her true name, Luisa Espina (remember this) and says that the rebel army is in the thousands.
They drop off the money as Coco is summoned by Chucky, who informs him that his daughter Leticia needs his help with something. The three head back to the scrap yard for a bit of a surprise.
Leticia Cruz
Leticia Cruz (Emily Tosta) is a handful. A character we initially thought might have a small role as Coco’s troubled porn star sister/daughter is showing far more depth than anyone could have predicted. Leti is a bad-ass.
Let’s run it down. In the early goings of the episode, Leti has a problem she needs to be resolved. She has Chucky (an apparent series regular, yay) track down Coco (Richard Cabral) for a request. Her lack of concern over the issue makes it seem as though she received a parking ticket or needed help with her math homework.
Nope. She murdered the trucker who she previously took off with. To be fair, the trucker attacked her for simply looking to borrow $10 and was probably not a great person to begin with. Leti’s deadpan reaction to serious life events is going to keep her a key player in the show, which is awesome.
Growing suspicions about Coco being the rat lead to him getting dragged away before he can help his daughter out and EZ (JD Pardo) is left with Leti instead. The two do their best but leave more destruction in their wake as Leti stabs one of the truckers friends and fails to reveal that the car she was using was actually stolen from her grandmother, leading to a police chase with EZ.
Leti is a complete wildcard and she’s going to be a handful for the MC. Don’t expect this to be the last mess they clean up for her.
Miguel and Christobal reunited
Early in the episode, one of Adelita’s (Carla Barrata) henchmen left the coordinates of their location out in the open for anyone to see. The cartel’s child informant took down the locates and quickly called them in.
Knowing the apparent location of the rebels, Miguel (Danny Pino) was ready to act. Before any decision could be made, he received a phone call from Adelita (timing on point). She requested a ransom payment for Christobal, which seemed almost too good to be true.
Miguel accepted immediately and went to the drop point, just across the Mexican border. He was instructed to Christobal’s location and immediately attempted to bring him back to the United States. Miguel and the baby were stopped by a tipped-off border agent and drugs were found in the blanket that Christobal was wrapped in.
There must be a bigger play here. Obviously, Miguel and the Galindo cartel have the money, resources, influence, etc to get out of a simple drug charge. Aside from a few hours in a prison cell, Miguel is only slightly inconvenienced by this move.
Meanwhile, giving up Christobal is giving up the biggest, most important piece of leverage the rebels had on the cartel. There has to be a bigger play here. This was a small part in a bigger plan set into action by the rebels. It would be foolish to assume Christobal is 100% safe right now.
A few notes — Christobal was sick in the previous episode, perhaps giving him back to his family was a sign of compassion or humanity, especially after the child’s rebel caretaker (the nun) was brutally murdered.
Still, we’re skeptical. Was Christobal poisoned with only the rebels having the correct antidote? Where is he right now? Do the rebels have an in with border security? Is Christobal secretly a drug mule that put all of this into action to get his heroin blankets into the US market? (Okay – that last one may be a little far-fetched).
If this move was solely to flush out who the rebel rat was, mission accomplished.
Los Olvidados exterminate the rat
Did they just murder that child? Yep. They did.
The coordinates left out in the open were a test and our fake orphan cartel friend failed miserably. In perhaps the most savage murder of the season, his best friend and infant rebel child is the one who pushes him off a building to his death after it is revealed that he is the rat.
Wait. These are the good guys? We understand that the child was informing for the cartel but did he really have a choice? It’s the cartel. It’s not as if he could turn down the opportunity with a simple “no thanks, I’m good.”
Los Olvidados is supposed to be saving kids, right? Not having other kids murder them. It seems as though Adelita might be losing sight of the purpose of what the rebels are doing as she gets closer to Miguel and the cartel. There has been a lot of blood on her hands as of late.
Lincoln Potter
This episode’s big reveal came in the final minutes. Eccentric Sons of Anarchy assistant U.S. district attorney Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon) has returned with his sights set on the Mayans MC. Uh oh.
You may remember Lincoln Potter from season 4 of Sons of Anarchy. His antics were often performed in a legal grey area and once he gets his sights set on something, he’s hell-bent to see it through. If Potter is scoping out the MC, trouble is coming.
Obviously, introducing Potter now might be the drop of water that bursts the floodgates for the Mayans. It seems as though trouble is on the horizon and having to deal with him won’t make anything easier.
Other notable takeaways
Coco needs to communicate better – Coco’s secrecy about Leti towards the club is understandable, but is going to get him killed. Bishop is already very suspicious of Coco as the rat. Of course, we know the actual rat is Angel, who is in love with Adelita. If faced with a decision to expose himself or let Coco die, chances are Angel will choose the latter.
The bumper sticker – EZ has another flashback while helping Leti. On their way to the murdered a**holes truck, EZ notices a bumper sticker on one of the passing vehicles. He saw the same bumper sticker the day his mother was murdered. Before too much is revealed, Leti snaps him out of it.
Jiminez and Felipe – Officer Jiminez (Maurice Compte), clearly shook by Felipe’s (Edward James Olmos) threat in the last episode, shows up to his doorstep hammered early in the morning, looking for answers. He is torn between helping out his extended family and the pressure put upon him from his boss. If nothing else, the interaction between the two throughout the episode has us empathizing with Jiminez, who is in a really tough spot.
Going through old pictures and documents with Jiminez, Felipe reveals the name of his old partner: Pedro “The thorn” Espina. Espina… where have we heard that before? Hang on…
Holy s**t Felipe’s partner was Adelita’s father.
