NHL DFS Man Advantage October 17
By Matt Vecchio
Welcome to NHL DFS Man Advantage for Wednesday October 17! Tonight we have a small 4 slate on tap. NBC Wednesday Night Hockey features the champs hosting the Rangers. We finally get the Islanders back on the ice in Anaheim taking on the Ducks. St. Louis heads north of the border to battle the Canadiens, and Boston heads to the great white north to battle the Flames.
For a small NHL DFS slate we actually have a bunch of very good goaltenders expected to be in net. Holtby, Rask, Allen, and Price could all be starting, which leave us trying to pick on the “lesser” talents in net to find the best value.
NHL DFS Goalies
Braden Holtby is the best choice for goaltenders on Wednesday in a matchup with Rangers who have plenty of trouble scoring goals early on and who are expected to be play their back, Alexandar Georgiev. Holtby has not been great to start the season with a horrible SV% of .896. He will need to be better, and I expect he will have a more Holtby-like performance on Wednesday
Tonight we have the potential for a goaltending clinic to be on display on Montreal on Wednesday. If Carey Price is back in net he should be up against Jake Allen for the Blues. Neither goalie has play exceptionally well, but Price has been the better of the two. Price is 1-1-1 with a 2.32 GAA and .909 SV% stopping 70 of 77 shots against. Allen is 1-1-2 with a horrendous 4.14 GAA and a SV% of .878. If I was going with one of these two it will most likely be Price.
Tuukka Rask is likely to get the start out in Calgary on Wednesday night. Rask has been pretty bad to start the season and has been out played by Thursdays expected starter, Jaroslav Halak. Tuukka has a 4.07 GAA and a .881 SV% to start the year, a very un Tuukka like start to the year. Calgary is 10th in the league with 18 goals scored this season so it will be a test for Rask, but I think Rask gets right against the Flames and gets the win.
NHL DFS Game Breakdowns
St. Louis Blues @ Monteal Canadiens
St. Louis is shaking up their lines a little in an effort to try to get some offense going against Montreal. Jordan Kyrou has been moved up to the first line to play with Ryan O’Reilly and Vladimir Tarasenko. Kyrou makes for some really nice value at only $3.2 on DK, that is a great price for a 1st line winger. In 5 games Kyrou has only 1 assist, but has taken 9 shots. Brayden Schenn and David Perron have been two of the Blues best players and make for a nice mini stack. On the point there is not much to use right now. Alex Pietrangelo has yet to get going and hasn’t recorded a point yet on the season, and only Colton Parayko has recorded multiple points (1 g and 1 a)
There have been a couple of players who seem to be finding the fountain of youth in Montreal, namely Tomas Tatar. I made the mistake of fading him on Monday night and all he did was go for a goal and 2 assists leading to 9.5 DKFP. Tatar plays on the Canadiens first line with Phillip Danault and Brendan Gallagher. Max Domi ( 4 assists ) and Paul Byron (3 g 2 a) make for good one-off plays. Jeff Petry is the best fantasy d man Montreal has right now with 5 assists and 10 shots.
New York Rangers @ Washington Capitals
New York heads south to DC off a shootout win at home on Tuesday. In 6 games the Rangers have only scored 14 goals. I don’t think the Rangers do much damage to Holtby and the Caps on Wednesday. I am interested in the Rangers 1st line of Chris Kreider / Mike Zibanjedad / Jesper Fast . Kreider has 2 goals and an assist and Fast has 1 goal 3 assists. No real choices on defense for the Rangers.
On the other hand Washington’s offense is scoring goals like their going out of style. Washington’s first line features one the best players in the world in Alexander Ovechkin, but it’s been Evgeny Kuznetsov who has been the best player for the Caps with his 4 goals and 5 assists. Chandler Stephenson is one of he luckiest men on the team, he gets to play with the previous two mentioned. On defense it’s the John Carlson show for the Caps. Carlson has 2 goals and 4 assists in 5 games so far.

Boston Bruins @ Calgary Flames
Boston rides into Calgary winning their last 4 and scoring 22 goals in the process. Boston gets the majority of their production from their first line. Of the 22 goals Boston has scored the top line has scored 13. Patrice Bergeron leads the team in points with 11, David Pastrnak leads the team in goals with 7 in 5 games, and Brad Marchand leas 9 assists. Jake Debrusk is the only other Bruin to score multiple goals on the season (2). On the point Charlie McAvoy has 5 points (1 g 4 a )
The Flames have scored 18 goals like I had mentioned earlier and the production is spread around with 11 players having scored goals for the team. Even thought the production is spread around, it’s still the Flames top line that does the most damage. They have scored 10 goals and 10 assists with Elias Lindholm and Sean Monahan both scoring 4 goals and 2 assists. Johnny Gaudreau leads the Flames in points thought with 8 (2 goals and 6 assists). Matthew Tkachuk is second on the team with 7 points ( 1 goal 6 assists). On defense Mark Giordano is leading all Flames defensemen with 4 points and 14 SOG.
New York Islanders @ Anaheim Ducks
New York is finally playing a game since they last played on Saturday and this is their second game in a week and a half. Andrew Lad is back on Wed. against the Ducks and is joining Josh Bailey and Mathew Barzal. Both Barzal and Bailey have 1 goal but Barzal has one more assists for one point lead. Anders Lee has 2 goals and 1 assist but has taken 13 shpts on goal. Either using Barzal or Bailey with Lee works to get you exposure to both pp units. There aren’t any D men with fantasy value for the Islanders
For Anaheim they are missing so much talent up front but they have had some of the kids step up, especially Maxime Comtois with his 2 goals and 3 assists while playing on the top line with Adam Henrique and Jakob Silfverberg. Henrique has played well centering these two (2 goals 2 assists) and Silfverberg has been even better with 3 goals 4 assists. Kiefer Sherwood is a cheap value player you can use who has played well of late posting 1 goal, 1 assist and 10 sog while playing almost 13 minutes a game. Hampus Lindholm has become a must play if you are using any Ducks in you lineup with his 1 goal and 5 assists on 9 shots while playing pp minutes on the second unit and averaging over 24 minutes a game.
