Fantasy Football 2018: Carlos Hyde Traded to Jacksonville
By Bill Pivetz
The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired running back Carlos Hyde from the Cleveland Browns on Friday. What is the fantasy football impact of the move?
The Cleveland Browns are moving on from Carlos Hyde, just seven months after signing him to a three-year, $15 million contract. The Browns traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fifth-round pick. The Jaguars are in need of a healthy running back and the Browns spent a second-round pick on one but how does this move affect fantasy football?
The Browns were high on Hyde early. He racked up 83 carries for 285 yards and five touchdowns in the first four weeks. Duke Johnson was getting his playing time on passing downs and rookie Nick Chubb was the change-of-pace back. The Browns offense could not support three running backs like some other teams.
Over the last two weeks, Hyde’s production dropped hard. He had 31 carries for just 97 yards or 3.1 yards per carry. This move makes Chubb a must-add. He’s owned in 20.3 percent of ESPN leagues and 61 percent in Yahoo leagues.

The Jaguars running back situation just got a bit crowded. With Leonard Fournette out, T.J. Yeldon was the starter with Jamaal Charles getting some carries.
Yeldon was dealing with a foot and ankle injury and was limited for Thursday’s practice but looks to be healthy for Sunday.
Hyde is expected to take a backseat role in Week 7 as he learns the Jaguars playbook.
Once he feels comfortable in the offense, he will split time with Yeldon in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Yeldon’s value took a big hit with this move. Hyde is healthy and was one of the top running backs early this season. Yeldon will still be active on passing downs as he has 25 receptions on 37 targets, something Hyde isn’t known for.
Fournette should be ready for action in Week 10, after the team’s bye week, putting both Yeldon and Hyde on the back burner until another injury surfaces.
The addition of Hyde won’t fix the Jaguars offensive woes. Blake Bortles has thrown just four touchdown passes and six interceptions in his last four games. It does give the team the option of using Yeldon in the passing game more.
Johnson will also get more playing time for Cleveland, so pick him up as well.
