Chelsea 2-2 Manchester United: Premier League highlights and recap
By Adam Stocker
Chelsea drew 2-2 with Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday, Oct. 20. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Ross Barkley scored a 96th-minute equalizer for Chelsea against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to maintain the Blues’ unbeaten record and move his side a point clear at the top of the table.
Jose Mourinho raised a few eyebrows with his team selection, giving a rare start to Juan Mata alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic in midfield, a sign of his intent to take a more attacking approach than usual away to big six teams.
Still, United were content to play on the counter, and Mata’s biggest contribution was shadowing Jorginho when his side didn’t have the ball. That Romelu Lukaku finished the first half with only nine touches reflected United’s lack of quality going forward.
But for a bad error from Pogba in the 21st minute — he failed to track Rudiger, who headed in the opener from Willian’s corner — Chelsea weren’t much more threatening than United, despite dominating possession.
The second half was more open as United began to take some more risks, and Alvaro Morata had a good chance to double Chelsea’s lead shortly after the break, but his shot was too close to David De Gea.
United equalized in the 55th minute after a bizarre passage of play in which Chelsea failed to clear the ball several times and Marcos Alonso lay on the floor in his own penalty area, seemingly hoping Mike Dean would award a free-kick.
After Kepa saved well from Juan Mata’s shot, United recycled possession and the ball eventually fell to Anthony Martial, who controlled well before finishing powerfully into the bottom corner, with Alonso, on the floor, the closest defender.
David Luiz missed a good headed chance to equalize, before Martial made it two in the 73rd minute, curling an excellent finish into the bottom corner after good play from Mata and Marcus Rashford down United’s right.
Mourinho brought on Andreas Pereira and Alexis Sanchez as United tried to see out the game, but Chelsea continued to press for the equalizer during six minutes of extra time, and after United failed to clear several hopeful Blues crosses, Barkley bundled in the equalizer.
Highlights
United stay eighth following the draw, while Chelsea move a point clear at the top of the table. They could finish the weekend third if Liverpool and Manchester City both win.
