The Euro Roundup: Lopetegui on the brink, dramatic Milan derby scenes
By Matt Addison
From Real Madrid to Borussia Dortmund via Alaves, all you need to know from this weekend’s round of European football action.
Real Madrid lost again to pile even more scrutiny on Julen Lopetegui, but there was better news for Inter, Bayern and PSG.
Whether Lopetegui survives to next week’s El Clasico remains to be seen, but with his team scoring just twice in their last six matches, it’s not looking good.
For Bayern, a tough start which saw their board call out the press this week for their coverage, ended on a better note as they picked up three points.
Real trouble for Lopetegui
Julen Lopetegui could be on the verge of being sacked with Real Madrid languishing in seventh place after losing 2-1 at home to Levante.
They are only four points off the top of the table but have not won for a month, losing four times and drawing once in that period.
Barcelona won 4-2 against Sevilla with four different goalscorers: Philippe Coutinho, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic. Messi, though, injured his arm after less than half an hour and had to be withdrawn; he will miss three weeks, meaning he will not be featuring in the Clasico.
Alaves are flying high having beaten Celta Vigo on Friday night. They sit in third place just one point behind Barcelona, while Espanyol are second on the same number of points as Alaves having won at Huesca.
Atletico Madrid lie in fifth after drawing with Villarreal, Real Betis lost 0-1 to Real Valladolid and Eibar held Athletic Bilbao to a 1-1 draw.
Icardi the hero
Mauro Icardi scored a 92nd-minute winner for Inter in the Milan derby after a cross by Matias Vecino. The forward sparked wild scenes in the San Siro as he headed home late on having already had the ball in the net earlier in the game, only for it to be ruled out.
The derby was a closely-fought affair with Inter edging the statistics: they had 18 shots to AC Milan’s 15, and also had 57 percent of the ball. Ultimately, only one thing really matters, and that is that Inter took the bragging rights.
Elsewhere, Genoa ended Juventus’ 100 percent record at the top of the table as they held on for a point at the Allianz Stadium.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring after 18 minutes, but Daniel Bessa equalized after the interval and that was how it stayed.
Napoli won 3-0 away at Udinese to close the gap at the top to just four points with Dries Mertens scoring from the spot in that one.
Roma lost 2-0 at home to SPAL, Frosinone played out an exciting 3-3 draw with Empoli, Lazio won 2-0 at Parma and Atalanta hammered Chievo Verona 5-1 with Josip Ilicic scoring a hat-trick.
PSG strolling
PSG have won 10 from 10 in Ligue 1 to go eight points clear of second-place Lille. They beat Amiens 5-0 meaning so far they have scored an average of 3.7 goals per league game.
Thierry Henry’s first game in charge of Monaco ended in a 2-1 defeat at Strasbourg, while a single Morgan Sanson goal was enough to see Marseille win 1-0 at Nice.
Lyon beat Nimes 2-0 on Friday night thanks to goals from Moussa Dembele and Memphis Depay but they are still fifth in the table and have almost half the points PSG have accumulated having played the same number of times.
Super Serb breaks record
In Germany, Eintracht Frankfurt demolished Fortuna Dusseldorf 7-1 on Friday night to open the weekend of action with 20-year-old Serbian Luka Jovic scoring five times, making him the youngest player to do so in Bundesliga history.
Normal service resumed for Bayern Munich as they won for the first time in a month against Wolfsburg. Robert Lewandowski scored twice and assisted another for James Rodriguez to take Bayern back into the top four places, above RB Leipzig who drew 0-0 at Augsburg.
Borussia Dortmund remain top of the pile — three clear of Borussia Monchengladbach in second and four clear of Bayern — after they beat Stuttgart 4-0. Jadon Sancho scored after three minutes on his first league start of the season, with Marco Reus, Paco Alcacer and Maxi Philipp adding the others.
Gladbach were also 4-0 winners in their game as they beat Mainz at Borussia Park, while Hoffenheim won 3-1 away at Nurnburg.
