NHL DFS Man Advantage Monday October 22
By Matt Vecchio
Welcome to NHL DFS Man Advantage for Monday October 22! Tonight we have a small 4 game slate! For tonight I will break down all 4 games giving you my top plays in net and then break down all 4 games on this slate by giving you the best line stacks for each team, values and top defensemen.
On this small NHL DFS slate there seems to be some lopsided games, but that’s the beauty of hockey, even the worst teams can find a way to beat the best teams on any given night. In the first game Colorado continues their Eastern swing with a visit to Philadelphia. Detroit coming off their first win Saturday hosts the Hurricanes, who are trying to end a 3 game skid. St Louis travels to Winnipeg to meet the Jets who are trying to win their 3rd straight, and in the last game of the night the Capitals travel to Western Canada to take on the Canucks in Vancouver
NHL DFS Goalies
My top goaltender on the night is Semyon Varlamov of the Avalanche. Varlamov is 2nd behind only John Gibson in SV% with .948 and a GAA of 1.77, he also third with a 6.88 GSAA. Philadelphia comes off a Saturday afternoon victory over the Devils in which they scored 5 goals. While the Flyers have scored the 2nd most goals in the league I think Varly is play too well right now and the Flyers will find him very difficult to beat.
Connor Hellebuyck is expected to get the start on Monday night against the Blues after resting on Saturday. Hellebuyck comes in to this game with a 3-2-1 record in 6 starts and a .914 SV% and a 2.66 GAA. St. Louis ranks 20th in the league with goals scored (21) and losing 3 of their last 4.
As far as the rest of the goalies it is hard to pick another goalie I really trust. Braden Holtby is most likely the best option taking on Vancouver. Right I don’t trust either of the Hurricanes goalies since the team has gone cold, and there is no way I am playing a Detroit goalie. Jake Allen has been terrible this season, and Chad Johnson wasn’t very good in his one start should he start in place of Allen. Brain Elliot is just terrible, and the Capitals are just too good for Jacob Markstrom to shut them down.
Colorado Avalanche @ Philadelphia Flyers
Top NHL DFS Line stacks:
For Colorado this is easy, its Mikko Rantanen – Nathan MacKinnon – Gabriel Landeskog. They are one of the best and hottest lines in the NHL and have really yet to be contained by anyone. On the season they have combined for 17 of the Avalanche’s 29 goals.
Philadelphia made some changes to their lines by moving Wayne Simmonds and his 6 goals up to the first line. But, my favorite line stack for Philly is their second line of Jakub Voracek – Nolan Patrick – Scott Laughton. This line won’t cost you as much as the top line but can produce like them. Laughton has been playing extremely well of late with 3 goals and an assist in the last 5.
Value Plays:
Alexander Kerfoot ($4.3K) for Colorado has 1 goal and 5 assists on the season. Kerfoot plays on the Avalanche second line with Tyson Jost ($3.4K) who is also a good value play and playing them together (in GPP’s) gives you exposure to a high scoring team and both power play units.
Thomas Konecny ($4.4K) has 2 goals and 2 assists in his last 3 games. Konecny plays on the second PP unit with Nolan Patrick and defensemen Travis Sanheim ($3.1K) has 3 assists in the last 3 games.
Defensemen:
Both Tyson Barrie and Erik Johnson have 5 assists each. Barrie plays on the first PP unit so that makes him a little more valuable to DFS players.
Robert Hagg has been the Flyers best defensemen with 2 goals and 3 assists. For how they are playing both Shayne Gostisbehere and Ivan Provorov are not worth their price.
Carolina Hurricanes @ Detroit Red Wings
Top NHL DFS Line Stacks:
Much like Colorado, the Hurricanes top line of Micheal Ferland – Sebastian Aho – Teuvo Teravainen have been the best line going for them right now. Their second line was productive earlier but have only 1 point in their last three games.
There is no full line stack I feel comfortable using just because this team has been so bad. Gustav Nyquist – Dylan Larkin make for a decent mini stack for Detroit. Both of these players have 7 points with Larkin have 4 goals and 1 for Nyquist.
Value Plays:
There are really no value plays for Carolina right now. If I had to pick one player who has the ability and might breakout it would be Andrei Svechnikov. While he only has 1 goal in his last 5, he does have 14 shots in the last 3 games so he is getting opportunities, he’s just not finishing.
Andreas Athanasiou for the Red Wings has 2 goals and an assist in his last 3 games and plays on the second PP unit for Detroit.

Defensemen:
Justin Faulk is the Hurricanes most productive d man currently with 4 assists thus far this season. Faulk also plays on the first PP unit with the entire first line.
Dennis Cholowski has been the Red Wings best player this season and has 2 goals and 3 assists in only 6 games (missed 2 games due to injury). Cholowski plays 2nd unit PP minutes along with Athanasiou.
St. Louis Blues @ Winnipeg Jets
Top Line Stacks:
Coming into tonight’s game I am more interested in the Blues second line as it boasts the teams top 2 scorers with 7 points each, David Perron – Ryan O’Reilly – Zachary Sanford. Perron leads the team in goals with 4 while O’Reilly leads in assists with 6. If you want some 1st line exposure Vladimir Tarasenko is the best one-off play
Winnipeg has not scored as much as they should be, but the line of Kyle Connor – Mark Scheifele – Blake Wheeler has been the one line that has consistently producing this season. Connor leads the team with 7 points and goals with 4 (tied with Adam Lowry).
Value Plays:
Alex Steen just falls into the value category coming in just under $5k at $4.8K on DraftKings. Steen has 2 goals, 3 assists, and 15 shots on goal and is seeing minutes on the second PP unit.
For Winnipeg the aforementioned Adam Lowry ($3.8K) is the best value play for the Jets right now. Lowry centers the 3rd line for the Jets, but the one downfall to Lowry is his lack of PP minutes
Defensemen:
None of the Blues d men have been playing well enough to be considered an option when it comes to DFS. Vince Dunn leads all defensemen in goals with 2 on the season and plays on the 1st PP unit.
Josh Morrissey is tied for the team lead in points with 7 (1 goal 6 assists) to go alone with 10 shots on goal and 18 blocked shots. Morrissey doesn’t play on either PP unit, but still gets over 23 minutes per game.
Washington Capitals @ Vancouver Canucks
Top Line Stacks:
Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetzov are two of the top two players on the Caps, but I am not looking to their line for a stack, I will consider them together or as a one-off in cash games though. Washington’s second line of Jakub Vrana – Nicklas Backstrom – T.J. Oshie have been playing exceptionally well together totaling 8 goals and 12 assists in 7 games this season. Also, Oshie and Backstrom play on the first PP unit.
There is only one line that has really been producing for the Canucks, Nikolay Goldobin – Bo Horvat – Brock Boeser have 8 goals and 6 assists combined this season. Vancouver is tough to use right now because of their lack of depth without Elias Pettersson, hopefully he can return this coming Saturday at home against Pittsburgh and make this team more desirable to use in DFS
Value Plays:
Washington’s best value is on the line stack I mentioned about, Jakub Vrana ($4.9K) and his 2 goals and 1 assist on the season. There isn’t much value that’s really worth playing on the Capitals. They are top heavy and expensive. They are team best suited for you to spend up on and find value elsewhere.
For Vancouver, Jake Virtanen ($3.2K) is the best value play. Virtanen has 2 goals and 2 assists (1 goal and 2 assists in his last 5 games) and he plays on the 2nd line as well as second PP unit for the Canucks.
Defensemen:
John Carlson is the obvious choice for Washington with 4 goals and 6 assists on the young season, but another defensemen that has been turning it on in Matt Niskanen. Niskanen has 1 goal and 2 assists in his last 5 games along with 13 sog. Niskanen at $4.8K will cost you $2.2K less then Carlson as well.
Alexander Edler has cooled off after his fast start(1 assist in his last 5 games), but he is still the best option on defense for the Canucks. Edler plays on the first d pair and pp unit.
