After two games, Lyon are surprisingly first in their group ahead of Manchester City. On Tuesday, Hoffenheim host Lyon in the first of back to back games between the two clubs. Hoffenheim are last in the group with only one point.
Hoffenheim got off to a great start against Manchester CIty, scoring an early goal but could not hold onto the lead. The Citizens were able to fight back and win 2-1. The loss moved Hoffenheim to the bottom of the table, three points behind Lyon, two behind City and one behind Shakhtar Donetsk Hoffenheim snapped their two-game losing streak in the Bundesliga over the weekend, beating Nuremberg 3-1. Reiss Nelson scored twice for Hoffenheim against Nuremberg. The 18-year-old is part of the trend that sees English teens leave the Premier League for bigger opportunites in Germany. Despite playing only 168 minutes, Nelson is tied for the team lead with four goals.
Lyon defeated City on the first match day before settling for a draw against Shakhtar. In Ligue 1, Lyon are fifth with 17 points in 10 games. If not for a poor away record, Lyon would be higher in the table. In four away games in Ligue 1, Lyon have only one win and have scored only five times and conceded eight goals. Bruno Genesio’s side will rely on Nabil Fekir and Memphis Depay to generate chances against Hoffenheim. Fekir was brillant in Lyon’s win against City and will have to be the best player on the field if Lyon are going to get out of the group.
