NHL DFS Man Advantage Tuesday October 23
By Matt Vecchio
Welcome to NHL DFS Man Advantage for Tuesday night October 23! Tonight is a big night with 8 games on the slate. There are some good high-priced cash options in net but some really good goalies on the cheap for GPP’s. Vegas seems to be thinking there is going to be a lot of low scoring games tonight as well with 5 of the 8 games coming in with O/U at 5.5 and only 3 having the usual 6 O/U.
Tonight’s spotlight NHL DFS game has to be (and not just because I’m a Penguins fan) Sidney Crosby and the Pens travel to western Canada to take on the Edmonton McDavids. Also there is an interesting match-up of two back up netminders at MSG when the Florida Panthers take on the Rangers. One of the lowest scoring games could be the Blue Jackets and Coyotes with two less than stellar offenses and two Vezina worthy goalies in net. John Gibson and the Ducks head into Chi town to tangle with the suddenly offensive powerhouse Chicago Blackhawks.
NHL DFS Goalies
Top goalie on this slate is Juuse Saros ($8K)of the Nashville Predators as they take on San Jose at home. Saros is taking over the starting role from Pekka Rinne while he recovers from injury suffered against the Flames last week. Saros is an NHL starting goalie caliber player, and while Rinne is a Vezina winner, the Predators do not take a step back with Saros in net as he showed with a 31 save shut out of the Oilers on Saturday night. Saros is only $8K on DraftKings and will be my top goalie on Tuesday
In Columbus we have a battle of two high quality goaltenders in Sergei Bobrovsky ($8.4K) and Antti Raanta ($6.9K). I prefer Bobrovsky in cash games because he is at home and has the better team playing front of him, while Raanta is a good GPP play. Bob has not started out well, .876 SV% and 3.84 GAA, but he has had 3 quality starts meaning when he is bad he is REALLY bad, but when he’s good, he’s REALLY good. Raanta may have a 2-4 record, but his stats show he deserves a better fate than that, he has a .911 SV% 2.32 GAA.
Mike Smith ($7.7K) is a fringe cash game play for the Flames against Montreal. Smith has given up 11 goals in his last three starts, but Montreal does not have the same offensive ability of Nashville, Boston, and St Louis. Calgary is the favorite on the road on Tuesday which is the reason I am making him a choice for Tuesday. If you need to save some cash but want a win, then Smith may be your best bet.
Top GPP Plays ( In order of preference)
1- Matt Murray (PIT – $7.3K)
2- John Gibson (ANH- $7.5K)
3- Craig Anderson ( OTT – $7.2K)
4- Carey Price (MTL – $7.5K)
NHL DFS Game Breakdowns
Pittsburgh Penguins @ Edmonton Oilers
Top Line Stacks
Pittsburgh – Of course this game is seen as Crosby v McDavid, but they aren’t the only talented players on the ice. For the Penguins my top line stack is Phil Kessel – Evgeni Malkin – Carl Hagelin. Malkin is the Pens leading scorer with 3 goals and 9 assists for the Penguins, Kessel is #2 in scoring for the Penguins with 4 goals and 4 assists. Hagelin may only have 2 points but playing with these two means he always has a chance to pick up a couple of assists.
Edmonton – For the Oilers it’s their top line that is the best choice for a stack. Connor McDavid has 4 goals and 7 assists on the season and is playing nearly 24 minutes a night. McDavid’s line mates are Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and his 2 goals and 5 assists and 19 SOG (4 more than McDavid) and new to the first line is Kailer Yamamoto, who may only have 1 goal but like Hagelin, play with this much talent can only lead to great things.
Value Plays
Pittsburgh – For the Penguins there is not a lot of value that is playing well, but Bryan Rust ($4K) is a value play because he plays on the first line for the Penguins with Crosby and Jake Guentzel. He may only have 1 assists but he is playing over 15 minutes per game for the Pens.
Edmonton – With only one line really playing well there isn’t much I like in the value part, but there is some upside with the potential of Jesse Puljujarvi. While he may only have 1 assist but he is playing over 13 mins of ice time since he was bumped up to the second line late last week.
Defensemen
Pittsburgh – Kris Letang is the Penguins far and away the Penguins best defenseman, when he’s healthy which he is right now. Letang has 4 goals and 4 assists, 22 shots on goal, and 9 blocked shots. If you want a value D man look at Juuso Riikola ($3K), since being put into the line up Riikola does not have any points, yet, but he is playing over 18 minutes a game and time on the PP
Edmonton – Darnell Nurse has been playing well of late with 1 goal and 2 assists in the last 5 while playing on the second d pair as well as the second PP unit

Florida Panthers @ New York Rangers
Top line stacks
Florida – Florida has been doing some line juggling of late trying to find something that works because they are not starting out the season well. Even with all the changes, the top line basically stayed in tact. Evgenii Dadonov is the Panther leading score with 3 goals and 4 assists, Aleksander Barkov has 2 goals and 4 assists and is playing over 23 mins per game. Nick Bjustad has 2 goals and 1 assist on the season.
New York – For the Rangers, the line of Chris Krieder (4 goas, 2 assists) is the leading scorer for the Rangers, Mika ZibaneJad has 3 goals and 2 assists along with 21 minutes of time on Ice. Jesper Fast rounds out the top line for the Rangers with his 1 goal and 3 assists
Value Plays
Florida – Denis Malgin ($3.8K) has been playing on the 2nd line for the Panthers and has 3 assists in his last 4 games.
New York – Third line center Brett Howden ( $3.4K) has a goal and an assist in his last 5 games for the Rangers
Defensemen
Florida – Keith Yandle has been one of the best players for the Panthers let alone their best defenseman. Yandle has at least one point in 5 straight games and is tied for the team lead in points with 7.
New York – It hasn’t been a great year for the Rangers but Neal Pionk has had a pretty good start to the season with 4 assists while playing over 21 minutes per game for the Rangers.
Boston Bruins @ Ottawa Senators
Top Line Stacks
Boston – This is pretty simple, the Bruins top line is the only one producing for this team right now. If you think you want to use the Bruins, just make sure you allocate the funds for the top line. David Pastrnak – Patrice Bergeron – Brad Marchand
Ottawa – I am on the Senators 2nd line tonight for a stack with Mark Stone – Chris Tierney – Ryan Dzingel all producing and are not too expensive($14.4K as a stack). Tierney leads the team with 9 points and has a goal and 6 assists in the last 5.
Value Plays
Boston – David Krejci ($4.5K) barely counts as a value, but he’s the best thing Boston has outside of the top 3 forwards. Krejci has 1 goal and 5 assists this season and is playing on the second PP unit for the Bruins
Ottawa – In his 11th season Mikkel Boedker ($3.9K) seems to have been rejuvenated this season. In 7 games Boedker has 2 goals and 4 assists to go along with 13 SOG and over 15 of TOI.
Defensemen
Boston – Charlie McAvoy is the Bruins best defensemen, as long as he plays since he missed the Bruins last game. McAvoy leads all Bruin dmen in goals and assists ( 1 g and 5 a)
Ottawa – The Senators have 2 men worth a look in Thomas Chabot and Maxime Lajoie. Chabot has 2 goals and 7 assists to go with 14 SOG while averaging over 21 minutes per game. Max has been a sweet surprise for the Sens with his 4 goals and 3 assists and averaging over 20 minutes a game on the Sens 3rd d pair.
I know there are 8 games on the night but these are the three I feel like should be the highest scoring games, but there are teams that I like but not full games. I will give you some options for using from those games on the next page.
NHL DFS Best of the Rest
Calgary Flames – Calgary’s top line is going to be expensive but is also one of the top lines on this slate, but I will suggest going down to their second line of Matthew Tkachuk – Mikael Backlund – Michael Frolik
Columbus Blue Jackets – Columbus gets Seth Jones and I might be inclined to play him. He is a dynamic player and a power play quarterback the Jackets didn’t have while he was out. I am also interested in Cam Atkinson and Artemin Panarin
Nashville Predators – Mattias Ekholm has been on fire to start the season with 2 goals, 5 assists and 14 SOG. Up front I want to get Filip Forsberg into some lineups. Forsberg has 6 points including 4 goals in his last 5 games.
Chicago and Anaheim – I know it won’t be a double shutout going into the shootout but I am not sure how many goals will be scored here because of the talent in net, so this game seems like a fade to me because there are so many other choices that we know are going to be higher scoring.
